Yeah, pretty much.
New combos are usually consistent in spacing as well. You may want to start a new combo if your spacing changes (Though this is advanced stuff; for a newbie mapper like you I'd recommend you stick to having Distance Snap on).
Don't have too long combos. If you have something like 15+ for a long part of the song, you know you can split it up at appropriate places.
Be intuitive. If you need to develop this intution, go for it! Play some Ranked Beatmaps, they have a fair idea of what's going on (Most of them, at least).
Also, playing the iNiS games of Ouendan and EBA help too; their combos are pretty spot on, more or less. (I mean, they're the authentics so it's hard to say they're wrong D:)
