Couldn't there be a button for this instead? So you could say "I want to search for updates" rather than just forcing it each time osu! starts because that would only add to the startup time (perhaps not a whole lot, buuut~)
This is where server power becomes a problem. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of spare cash to pay for a fully dedicated uber server, and such updates require a huge number of database quieries. Maybe one day I will be able to move to a quad core which can handle such load, but for now I'm not sure this is a possibility.Is what I was going to say, but I think this may be possible at some point in the near future without changing the server setup.
Be careful about updating maps you're working on though. We don't want half finished maps to be overwritten by a less complete uploaded copy.
I also asked this last night, but yeah, as peppy said, it requires more server power and $$$.
