I have an important question about modding, more specifically about Mapset Verifier

If I need to mod somebody's mapset and the app is telling me that there are a lot of problems, do I need to make a review with all the problems listed from there or just tell them to install it and focus on more relative problems?

It depends, but if we think of it as modding, we use Mapset Verifier (MV) to identify the problem, but we think it is important to communicate it in our own words.

so If you want to do as modding recommend to do above.
but if it not as modding, you can tell mapper in PM(Chat) there is MV tool

Is there a tool that can help me to better catch the rhythm of music with an inconsistent tempo?

(Good luck with this thread ;))

(thanks!)

As for your question, osu!lazer editor might help it.
because there is audio visualizer you can turn on it from List at the top of the screen.
If you do this, you will see a waveform that gets louder at the timing of the snare or other sound, and if it is off, you can add a new timing.

also, The way I do complex bpm is to set the playback rate to 25% and check if the timing is correct while placing the notes with hit sounds. It's manual, but by comparing it to the hit sound, I can be pretty sure I'm making progress.
Leon Brigido
Oh I had no idea you could do that in Lazer, maybe I'll try it with some music I have saved, thanks!

i have a question bout mapset verifier, how do i know if my map rankable or not? (through MV)
and is it necessary to fill the whole playfield to get ranked?

Actually, I think the mapset verifier can find the problem based on RC, but I don't think it has anything to do with rankable.
Because whether it is rankable or not depends on the decision of the BN or NAT.

There are three main criteria (in my case): whether or not I understand RC, whether or not the mapping fits the song, and whether or not my original ideas, concepts, etc. are working.
I would be happy to be of help.

As to your second question, it is possible to rank without using a full playfield. Some do it as a concept, some just don't use it, but it would be more impressive if you could use it whenever possible.

how would you represent vocals that emphasize off beats or other weak beats?
ie: the backing track is 1e,+a,2e,+a,3e,+a,4e,+a but the vocalist is 1e,+,a2,e,+,a3e,+a4e,+a

is there any tricks you have to help syncopated rhythms feel less awkward for players?

in a broad sense what are common ways to simplify complex rhythms?

while i am relatively new to mapping i have experience in music and understand general mapping terms.

On the other hand, I don't have a lot of musical knowledge, so I don't understand about the first 1e,+a,2e,+a,3e,+a,4e,+a parts, but let's look at them one by one.

Regarding the first syncopation, this depends on whether the note is strong or weak, but in mapping you don't have to follow every note, it depends on the style.
If it is a strong sound (such as cymbals), you can place a longer slider, such as 3/4, to emphasize it with the long press action that occurs there.
If not, then that note can be followed with a slider end and the note can start on the next note.
Here is a sample map: beatmapsets/1786219#osu/3727843 Extra 00:52:343 (5,1) - 01:02:145 (9,1) - etc.

For the second step of simplifying the rhythm, it is easiest to use a reverse slider, but in some cases, the number of notes can be reduced.
Reverse slider example: beatmapsets/2136178#osu/4495043 Extra 01:21:897 -
Example of reducing the number of sounds: beatmapsets/1312076#osu/2996105 Icekalt's Light Insane

These are mappings focused on specific instruments.
You can increase the number of notes for parts that you want to make more difficult.

If you want to know more about this you can ask in pm.

I recently got back into osu! and this time I really want to continue playing and interacting more with the community. I've always wanted to do a beatmap so now im creating my first sets and then probably a whole lot more.

The main issue I'm having right now is with the hitsounds. I don't really understand why & how many of them are needed and where I should put them. Another thing I don't know how to use, are custom hitsounds. I did get custom sounds by another osu! player and put the .wav into my song/beatmap folder and then put timing hitsounds on custom but it didnt work, dont know what I'm doing wrong.

To be honest any help would be great since my main goal is getting better at making maps for other people.

Hitsound can be done in different ways for different people, but the easiest way is to attach it to a song, and the corresponding sample can be used.
Also, as a prerequisite, you will need to understand the hitsound system, so I will explain a little.

Sampleset: This is the sound that absolutely must sound, and in any case one or more sounds must be played for feedback.
(Normal, Soft, Drum): This allows for more types of sounds, a total of 12 sounds can be combined and up to 4 can be played at the same time.
Additions (Whistle, Finish, Clap):This is easier to understand if you think of it according to the sounds corresponding to the song.
Whistle is the melody
Finish is the cymbal
Clap is a snare, etc.
Sampleset Drum corresponds to drums.

Then place it so that it corresponds to the song.
You can probably find more information on this in the wiki, so I'll put the page up.

Hey do you have any advice for getting into modding? I've been having a lot of trouble finding maps where people are even ok with getting mods, and my friends have all stopped playing. How did you do it? Do I need friends in the space first?
lewski
having friends is super helpful in every part of this hobby, yeah

but you can also just stalk modding queues; if someone posts a map in a queue they MUST surely be expecting it to get modded

fwiw though sometimes even if someone seems to be pushing a map they'll act as if only the specific people they've asked are allowed to mod their map. this is a delusional stance to take and people who do this are simply not worth your time. if you're trying your best to post helpful mods and aren't essentially just unleashing a flood of nonsense, a hostile reaction says far more about the mapper than it says about you

You could try opening a modding queue in the respective subforum (community/forums/60) or on https://osumod.com/

Another option is to go through other people's modding queues and mod maps requested there if you don't want to have your own queue.

Lastly, if you come across a pending map you would like to mod, you can try messaging the mapper directly to ask if they're looking for mods, in order to avoid not getting a reply to your suggestions, which would end up being a waste of time.

So, I am pretty new to mapping, and I am working on my second beatmap for now. I have a couple quick questions as well as a little bit of context I will put at the end. I am doing Play by Thaehan. Mostly for practice, but I also have some ideas for visually representing the song that I don't see in any of the existing maps of the song, soo.

1. I am not sure if this pattern is too awkward or not? Or what level of difficulty it would be suited for? I was thinking a harder normal or easier hard type range, for now it's in my normal but If it is fine but seems a little bit too hard in playtesting I might move it to the hard?

upload images

C: I know the movement is partially unnatural, but I reduced the spacing multiplier a bit to hopefully make up for that. (In a consistent way though.) I actually want it to be slightly awkward since this part of the song is different so I want to draw more attention to it. Without it being too hard of course.
It's a new pattern, but I will probably use it or a variation at least 3-4 times in the song based on my general listening. Which should mean that the spacing modification to make it a tad easier shouldn't result in an inconsistency element. (I also noted down the values so I can keep the same spacing if not the pattern for any different notes with the same timing.) It is technically already a simplicification of the notes here even though it isn't the most natural.

2. Question set 2: When is it okay to change the distance snap for spacing within a section? From what I heard it can be done if you are consistent with using a specific spacing to show a certain timing between two notes.
But, I am not sure when that would and would not violate time-distance equality? Like if when I have a lot of notes happening quickly so they would be touching, If I bring them closer together to have a closer overlap that is still readable, I expect that would be easier. But the relationship between time and distance isn't scaling linearly? Is that fine on a normal? What about an easy?(It is more mute of an issue on easy, since generally they don't have distinct clicked notes fast enough where making them overlap would actually make sense in most cases, I guess maybe it might happen more with a really big circle size? Also, how much of a spacing difference is readable when it comes to giving a different feel really? (I guess it might depend on how far appart the notes are as well?) And so smaller differences in spacing are a lot more visible when the objects are already far apart.

C: One of the things I have been trying to use as a key element other than the general aesthetic direction is working to use spacing more intentionally when using distance snap. I have been working to try varying the distance snap more strategically and in a consistent manner in this map. I realized after mapping a bit that I mis-identified the slowest point in the song. (Which I was thinking I would put the closest distance at.)
I also misread the ranking criteria and made my lowest distance 0.75 rather than 0.8 and my highest 1.25 rather than 1.3.
Not sure if I should redo it, or if maybe I should just bump this map to being my light hard maybe since I am going to go back for my normal and easy anyways. That isn't my main question here though. Since that is more of a subjective choice of how to spend my time rather than like a "how to map" like thing.

3. Does anyone have any recommendations for songs to practice beatmapping on. I have been looking through the featured artists and going for shorter songs since I know I can iterate on them quicker and finish with an idea in less time than something like 3-5 minutes. I couldn't find anything with english lyrics sub-1 minute. And the stuff in between 1-2 and 2-3 are pretty overwhelming. But I got a bunch of cool EDM and instrumental tracks that I could practice on. However, when I do get to longer ones, I expect that it would be a lot easier to figure out which instruments to prioritize and follow with a song with lyrics since I can follow them. And I can also use the words themselves as an additional source of inspiration when it comes to the aesthetics of the map.

C: I have watched most of Pishifats videos, and all on the main playlist, and a couple from some other people. But I have only been mapping like 2 weeks maybe? A little bit each day. My plan is to make some practice maps as if I was going for ranked and push some of them for Modding and such, but try to get 3-4 modded so I get good feedback to internalize before trying to polish one up completely for ranking. I am also thinking of trying to focus on a particular way of giving variation and a specific tool in the editor on each map so I can systematically learn each of them.

I am actually pretty new to OSU as well. (I think I have been playing maybe a month or so?) Hards still give me a bit of trouble in a lot of cases, but with determination I can usually at least get a C or D in most, and I can occassionally get no misses on one. I have completely a couple insane. But only easier ones. Although Ironically I have found some light insanes easier than a lot of hards, I am pretty good with fairly quick speeds, sliders, reading, and precise aiming. But I really struggle with streams. So a Hard map with a lot of even small streams might result in me barely passing in a lot of cases. Although, I did manage to get like my first B on a map with a decent number of streams like last week. I still missed a lot on it though.

So, I am thinking about trying to go for a 3-4 difficulty spread when I do go to rank: Easy, Normal, Easier hard(Advanced?), and then a harder hard.(Or maybe light insane that uses concepts I can play well, so lots of precise aiming and quick tempo but not so much that it has streams?)

Although, I might just go normal/hard or straight normal for some of my practice maps depending on how I feel about them.

Regardless I want to try to hit the general standards of difficulty at least even if the level of fun and other aspects of quality aren't enough to really be worth ranking for sure. Since my primary goal for now is learning.

I hope this isn't too long and that multiple questions are okay.

I don't Know what NC, OD, CS, or Chorus mean.
I think DS is Distance Snap but am not sure?
I assume Contrast and Emphasis are more metaphorical tools for showing that things are different or important.
You could emphasize something with spacing, slider velocity, less natural movement, a new combo, etc.

cant really answer all of them but ill try to answer the ones that i think should be important

not really if this was for a higher level difficulty, but this is pretty awkward for a normal

you should definitely use distance snap for normal difficulty since it can prevent weird spacing issues in general for players who can only really handle normal

also you're overthinking over spacing, keep in mind for higher difficulty maps, you should probably make low spacing on more calm parts and high spacing on intense/energetic parts

for streams, you can do the same by slowly increasing the spacing of each circle to show intense parts

just do songs you listen to the most, since most of the time you are able to separate different parts of the song and be able to tell the difference between them, and focus on what you think are the most important parts of the song.

nc - short for new combo
od - short for overall difficulty, basically the setting that makes hitting the circles easier or harder
cs - short for circle size, the more higher the number is the smaller the circles in the map are
chorus - part of the song, maybe the most intense part in some certain parts

also for emphasis, focus on one method of it first, trying to focus on all ways you can put emphasis can actually cause it to the things you want emphasis on have less emphasis

Distance snap should be used, and the value should not be lowered or raised too much, there is another reason for this, RC recommends changing the Slider Velocity instead, this has the difference between the distance and the slider velocity to change the speed of the movement, and multiple in the same section Because it will result in different speed sensations.
It would be very difficult to move too slowly on a slider but spacing is too far away.
Easy and Normal diff apply this.

The ranking process is long, but with the right motivation and thought, you should be able to make it.
If you are making a visual map or something like that, you don't need to be concerned about rank, and there should be an appropriate community. I don't know much about that one...

In such cases, it is better to get direct feedback from other mappers, especially since there are many different ways of thinking about mapping, which is influenced by the style of the map.

If you have a favorite mapper and he/she is not busy, etc., he/she might reply to you if you ask politely.

I have hitsounding guide. It's mostly based on Lasse's guide, but it includes almost everything you need:
  1. Some Theory
  2. Different drum samples
  3. Hitsounding Techniques
  4. Mapping Tools
  5. etc.
I would recommend first reading Lasses's guide and check my later on

Avaliable audio file extensions.

Sounds like usefull topic for you: "How to bypass max file size limit"

TLDR: Use mp3 or ogg. Put a circle at the end of each yet unmapped difficulty. In this way osu will treat your maps as fully mapped and will allow you to upload up to 100MB which must be enough

I have another question but regarding the beat snap divisor this time

Is it ok if the note density consist of occasional 1/3 instead of 1/2 on a Normal difficulty?

It depends on the BPM but usually yes, however I recommend using it sparingly, so use passive 1/3 gaps if possible, and try to avoid more than 2-3 objects in a row with 1/3 gaps between them.

It's been a while here —

I know that DS needs to be used for easy and normal difficulties, but are there any good examples of hard, insane or extra diffs using this option for all objects? I'm currently making a NHI mapset with the idea of whether it's possible to actually make an enjoyable map without ever deactivating the DS

DS is often used for Hard diffs too, not always as strictly as in Easy/Normal but some Hard diffs still use 100% distance snap. For Insane and Extra, it becomes very rare to find maps with consistent spacing throughout, as even old maps include spacing variations at those difficulty levels, but I'm sure there are a few. It's definitely possible to make a good and enjoyable map with DS since there are many other aspects that can add emphasis like rhythm, patterning, SV etc.

You probably have to look at old maps like beatmapsets/5182#osu/38566, I couldn't find more recent ones that are fully DS but there are some that come pretty close (like 90%) such as beatmapsets/1621130#osu/3309941 or beatmapsets/365323#osu/808167.

you can't, it'll just show up automatically once you upload the map

it depends on background of beatmap, you need to setup background image first.
see wiki/en/Beatmap/Background

and then upload/update map, if you have caches it not show correctly sometimes, so you can delete caches from osu! folder, it is hidden folder osu!>data>bt>(mapsetid)
you can restart osu! and show it correctly i think.

it depends on category cuz popular as mapper but good for players or good for mappers etc.

for players
song choice is really important if you want become popular as a mapper imo. cuz some players enjoy songs while playing rhythm games.
and map need to be comfort as playing-wise.

for mappers
you can try contest mapping and if you show any cool mapping it should have result as popular.
most of contest mappers will check results so it has chance to get popular imo.

hope it help as idea

Collabs are usually done in 2 ways:
  1. Tag collab: Mappers map in order from the start of the map -> takes more time, but higher quality
  2. Everyone maps their own part and then collab organizer adds them to his own diff and rearranges some objects to connect the parts-> takes less time, but usually worse quality
Or it can be hybrid, but it's usually too hard to manage

Hi! Im a amateur in mapping, and have a some questions about modding, will glad for answers: Do bn's attention to the number of mods in the map? Do I need mods to bn nominate a map (if yes, then how much), or is it possible to do this without mods? And how to avoid overmodding?

for new mappers, both too many and too few mods can be a problem (or rather, they can indicate a problem).
if you have no mods at all, the map is likely unpolished and still has lots of issues.
if you have too many mods (let's say, 50+ mod posts on a tv size difficulty), it probably means that the map has so many issues that the amount of changes required to make it good is basically equivalent to a full remap.

however, the amount of mods isn't the only thing that can indicate that your map isn't ready for ranking yet.
if, for example, there is a general post explaining that the whole map is affected by severe rhythm issues, it is usually best to give up on ranking the map, map a different song and apply what you've learned from the mods there.

there is also the "map of theseus" phenomenon, as i like to call it.
after a certain amount of mods, the map will have been modified so heavily that the map before the mods has little to do with the map after the mods.
at this point, you should probably stop investing more time into the map. either ask bns if they're interested and then move on, or just move on and map another song without asking bns, that's up to you.

for experienced mappers, however, it is common to request bns without getting any mods prior to that, because there usually won't be many issues (or at least no fundamental, overarching issues) in the first place.
but even experienced mappers will pretty much always receive at least some mods from bns if their map gets accepted.

Rose Winters wrote:

i'm not a bn, but i could imagine that some bns do actively pay attention to the amount of modding posts when considering accepting a map.
in any case, requesting mods from non-bns will most definitely make your map more polished and thus more likely to get accepted by bns.

Rose Winters wrote:

there are no actual rules about the amount of modding your map has to receive or whatever, but, as i said, a more polished map is more likely to get accepted, so getting mods is advisable.

lastly, i think there are 2 key takeaways from all of this:
  1. don't spend too much time on a single map. if you've been actively trying to rank the same map for like 6 months with no success in sight, let's be real, you're not getting anywhere, and you're wasting valuable time you could use to improve as a mapper instead. move on and map something else, applying the knowledge you've acquired by reading the mods.
  2. don't be afraid to ask bns. even if you're not sure whether your map even has a chance of getting accepted, it's still worth trying. the worst they can say is "no".
