recently ive been trying to find the most efficient way to progress and what i find is that just restarting a map over and over again till you get what you want works. not just farm maps but actually challenging ones as well. however, i watch people that are like 50k and less just scrolling through maps and once they fail they quit and try a different one? i also think ive heard somewhere out there in a forum or yt video that say you shouldn't be "grinding maps" and im just curious to how i should be playing maps.

The thing is just to 'perfect your art'. Some people just pass maps then don't play them again. Knowing their score is supposedly B, C, A, an acronym for Bank Central Asia, you name it. They just don't master those patterns and proceed to suffer in the future. Grinding maps is all right as long as you know when to stop. Constantly overcommitting is one of the grave mistakes, supposedly, which can lead to future mind-block.

Enjoy the game.

For general improvement, you shouldn't be grinding maps beyond maybe 10-20 tries. Its good if you get a score you're happy with, sure, but it's better to stop trying so hard on one particular map and just try a new one. You can always come back around in a session or two if you want.

Grinding for anything should really only happen if it's something you REALLY want, such as going for an SS (where you'd have to restart if you mess up) or if it's some particular song or score you want to set. Even then it's likely not a good idea to let the retry counter go up into triple digits because that's often a sign of frustration and anger overriding common sense, or the arrival of the sunk cost fallacy. Either way, it's not good for anyone.

Ultimately, as mp says, enjoyment of the game should come first. It probably won't hurt if you're trying to, say, 4-mod some 1* map when you can reliably SS 1-2* maps NM or something along those lines, but I still wouldn't do that often.

what i enjoy doing is just going through the recently ranked maps and playing the ones i like the most

if you want to grind for a score then just do it

osu has no imposed goals, just make your own ones

Not everyone is like that. There are players who just sightread maps they have in their collection and see if they can get a good score, but there are also players who grind specific maps to get a good score as well.

Grinding maps is not bad at all, it depends if you think it's good for you.

Personally I just play maps I can't 90%+ 1 or 2 times and move on lol

the reason i improved so slow for 3 years was because i was brainwashed into the mindset of not grinding maps. grinding maps is the way but yeah you shouldnt grind maps for passing. But you should grind maps to fc them or get better accuracy on them.

You are not wrong on grinding maps but know when you you should do it. Spending hours on a map that you clearly can't play is useless

Yeah exactly, grind it on stuff you can actually play
