Tell american bands to buy a metronome and I'd map more american songs.

This. I see now that the stem is too skinny but that "apple" was pretty fucking orange for an apple =|

How could you guys think it was a pumpkin? He posted in a thread saying it was an apple, but really? I would've been able to tell it was an apple easily. It doesn't look remotely like a pumpkin.
What are you talking about? It IS a pumpkin.

Ph0X, use your colour thingy. Prove it's a pumpkin with SCIENCE!

Why is the thread going off to-

Pfft, Pears are manlier.

There are currently 671 ranked maps with English lyrics

There are 33 maps tagged with the Hip Hop genre.

There are 28 maps that are both English and Hip Hop.

None of the maps are Japanese - they're, uh, decimal, I guess? They're just csv's pretty much.

Songs? Close. Like, 50% perhaps. There's a sort by genre for that reason, I guess.
Ekaru
About 42 pages Japanese, about 34 pages English. For Ranked, I mean.

EDIT: Brought to you by the "Sort by Language" tab, for people like you!

Or you could use the actual numbers of results like I did, like where it says "Displaying 1 to 20 of XXX results."

As of this posting, English Ranked is now up to 672, Japanese Ranked is at 866, total ranked is at 2026.

That's about 43% Japanese, 33% English, 24% neither. If you want to disregard the other 24% (to compare just Japanese and English directly), the ratio is about 56% to 44%.
Ph0X
On a very related note, what do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?

I prefer this sum based on what kind of maps the community plays the most.

You could have a whole field of Hummers and a large patch of Volvos for sale, but if your customers are buying more of the Volvos rather then the Hummers, then obviously consumer focus is on Volvos.

Your point? The community still plays weeaboo japanese, as seen from the "Most played in last 24 hours", 4/5 of them are japanese. So theres no difference. Stop trying to wow us with obvious ctrl-v'd shit.
5ku112
Yeesh so cranky, i'm guessing that was too TL;DR for you.

If more people are playing Japanese maps then English maps, it doesn't really matter if there are less Japanese maps then English maps because most of the time Japanese maps are being played.

Question: Is this game focused on Weeaboos? Or is it's demographic more spread out?
Wojjan
Why do you even bother asking?
awp
It's focused on fans of click'n'dance rhythm games. The fact that half the fanbase is japanese/weeaboo is purely coincidental.
Dangaard
Everyone is free to play and map what he/she likes.
5ku112
Above me; Perfect answers.

@ OP
Nothings stopping you from playing non-japanese maps. People just happen to play Japanese maps more then non-japanese maps.

Primary focus isn't on Japanese beatmaps, most of the community just happens to play them the most.
qlum
less than half of the ranked maps 820 are Japanese and 1055 are English or instrumental
I don't care about the genres of music since I don't like listening to it

a lot of the J-Pop and such has some pretty stand-out beats and a more poppy sound that make them easier to map and imo easier to play. I tend to suffer if anything suddenly has a guitar solo because someone managed to map the things and to me it just sounds like one noise blends into the other half the time, especially with American metal and the sort. Hip-hop, on the other hand, is beyond me why more people don't map, since it basically has everything that makes it approachable to laying out and playing that J-Pop and the like have. Not my genre of choice, but given the popularity of it and rap anymore I'm a bit surprised there's not more of it.

Then again, rap tends to have really predictable patterns, which doesn't make for the most entertaining gaming experience ever with something like this... depends on the mapper's creativity, though, I suppose.

Rap is a challenge to map given how unbearably repetitive it is.

and jap song isnt? :\
rap songs pretty much are verse / chorus / verse / chorus / verse / chorus like any other song.
chorus is repeated but each verse is new.

personally I find all those iosys songs and stuff VERY VERY similar and repititive.
They all have the same beat and since i don't even understand the lyrics, it becomes even more repetitive.

Then again, it would go back to taste i guess :)

Rap usually follows the same single set of beats through the entire song.
Zaron_old
Repetition seems to be percieved differently based on what you hone in on. If you focus on words, you won't find rap (as) repetitive. However, since a fair chunk of beatmaps go to the beat or certain instrument, unless a map goes to those vocals, and sometimes even then depending on the song, the part your focused on (and with vocals it won't be what's being said, but when it's being said) will be much more noticeable if it's too redundant.

At which point the mapper will spontaniously change what the song is going to to screw with you. :D

And, honestly, any genre can have redundant music in it.

So fine.

We need more classical maps. :D -shot-

Speak to me in a few months, when I actually decide to work on maps again.
Ekaru
Zaron: No offense, but the vocals are *why* I find most rap so repetitive. Then again my school listens to lots of strange stuff really loudly. Some of the rap songs they listen to just repeat the same words over and over and over, which turned me away from rap pretty quickly.

While I don't get it either, most of the Japanese music mapped here is like 90 seconds long. If rap offered 90-second diet songs (or maybe 80-second songs, since most rap seems to be 4 seconds of a beat repeated over and over) it'd be more manageable since the repetition would be less pronounced over a shorter period of time. While it feels odd to say it, however, j-pop actually is less repetitive than rap since the music, while very synthetic and computerized, goes through more motions than rap. In a world where the only two genres of music were rap and j-pop, and vocals were stripped from all music entirely, I imagine the majority of people who weren't under the influence of alcohol (since rap is a popular party choice) would be listening to j-pop. The music makes at least some effort to 'mix it up' even if it is kind of trite and modest.

Yeah, this song or any other I've heard wouldn't be a good candidate to pass judgment on an entire genre, but this song is pretty much what I'm talking about. Turning tracks on and off is a very pathetic means of creating variety. This song really does sound like the same four seconds over and over in an A A A B pattern.

I'm not saying it's unheard of for rap to have variety to it, but in the 30 or so randomly selected songs I've heard, they've all fallen very short of impressive. While the video has some interesting quirks to it, as far as I'm concerned, the song is repetitive as hell.

Granted, I'm rather picky about this sort of thing and tend to consider a lot of stuff "repetitive" as I listen to a lot of stuff like progressive and avant-garde metal.

I tried.
I failed since I can't stick to the metronome religiously.
I'll try again later heh.
Kanbei
I agree with the idea that rap is super repetitive, but maybe you could map it if on one round you mapped the lyrics, and another you mapped the beat.

then the beatmap wouldn't be as repetitive!
Mogsy
That would be a schizophrenic map and not enjoyable. Switching a focus completely in the middle is detrimental to a map.
LuigiHann
I think as long as that change was triggered or indicated by something then it would be okay. Mapping an identical part differently, I agree, would be weird.

Although I am a fan of doing weird things in maps

As long as weirdness doesn't interfere with how a map plays. I still feel like an indicated or triggered change such as that would be uncalled for and still feel awkward in the long run, since you're mapping an identical part differently.
LuigiHann
When I say indicated or triggered I kind of meant, something in the song itself. Like if the music was louder of if they amped up the drums or something. It's okay to map differently as long as something changes in the music to prompt it, even if the mapping change and the music change aren't directly related. This was intended to be in contrast to my other sentence where I mention identical parts.
