Yep, could be fun for passing time.

Another idea would be setting up something similar to "pTransl" where people can post osu! related questions (or other ones too maybe) and people would vote for the questions they like.
But then, people would know the questions and their answers.
Maybe simply mix those question in the middle of alot of other non-related questions or have them filtered by couple of trivia mods instead of having everyone see and vote them.

About the rewards, maybe couple xp but not a whole level.
Seperate point system sounds better though.

I have some code for an irc bot which I used for the/my mafia bot. It could easily (as in easily) modified to do anything you want (possibly except rape)

I think this is a good idea if implemented properly. A #trivia channel with a bot in it would be kind of fun imo. I think the main problem would be who would write up all the Q and A's, then who would code it. (Though Echo seems like he could take care of this part?)

I think a database with everyone whose participated so far's number of correctly answered questions would be a good idea. (Ex. After each correct answer, the bot is like 'Correct-blah-blah, Hito has moved up to rank #4 in trivia, with 63 correct answers to date. etc.)

I don't think exp should be awarded for Total Level/etc though. osu! trivia is osu! triva, osu! is osu!, best to keep them separate.

I'm a little worried about spam, but maybe I'm overestimating how many people would be interested in participating. Also, there's the language barrier problem come to think of it. I'd feel a little bad if all the questions were in English, since if you don't speak English, you're missing out on a feature. I might be worrying for nothing there though.

Well, either way it'd need to be run by peppy, to see what he thinks and if he'd make a #trivia channel and allow it. orz

If it's a one-person-at-a-time type of game, I would think that a PM would work better, but if multiple people can answer (like playing a mafia game in #mafia with a bot), then yeah, a new channel would be great.

I really don't think this is the best idea, just have some people put together trivia questions for a thread on the forums or something. You could even play through PMs.

Shouldn't be too hard to whip one up. Given enough time I could probably have it output its own ranking charts too.

Don't take this as a guarantee that I'll finish it, though.

Any kind of reward, especially one worth money will just lead to people creating bots that first harvest the correct answers to the questions by watching the channel and then start answering the questions when they have the answers. I might sound a bit pessimistic, but creating such a bot is laughingly easy and will be done often if there's a reward for it. Also, it's really hard or impossible to notice if done correctly.

People don't usually get any sort of reward for answering trivia, so IMO there shouldn't be one. Trivia is there for fun, not for trying to get rewards. The only reward you should want is the knowledge that you know more about Osu! than someone else~

Preferably a simple 'question and answer' where the questions are basic questions like "What is the song title of the beatmap with ID # 1?" then whoever gets the song title correct (capitalization not required) will get the point. But for the question like above, where capitalization and other stuff are needed, multiple choice is the best solution. So it will preferably be a variety of question types.

I would, but it'll be a while before I can use my PC again. However, I can make new questions of the sort. Actually, ya'll can help with that as well.

Also, as a note, only post questions about maps already ranked, or in some cases, approved.

Formats
Q: What game was "Artist - Title" from? (Beatmap by mapper, ranked by BAT on Month Day, Year)
A: Name of Game (EX: The World Ends With You, Disgaea, Persona 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, etc.)

Q: What anime is "Artist - Title" from? (Beatmap by mapper, ranked by BAT on Month Day, Year)
A: Name of Anime (EX: Chobits, Fullmetal Alchemist, Nyan Koi, etc.)

Q: Who mapped "Artist - Title"? (Ranked Month Day, Year by BAT)
A: Username (EX: Cyclone, peppy, Pasonia, Larto, etc.)

And so on.

If it's fine with Hito, I think a better way to do this is if you all pm her with your question/answers, then she can compile them into a file and hand them over to me. Then if peppy agrees we can hardcode this bot into bancho. We need another use for the Bot base class anyway =x

No promises though.

Fine by me. Just make sure you put Osu! Trivia Questions as the title of the PM, otherwise I'll likely ignore it completely. >_>

as you can see some of my questions require the bot to know certain in time knowledge, but some are just plain facts. I realize that the real-time stuff would be much harder to work with, but I think that it would make it a lot more fun to search the forums for some certain info tidbit.

Achievement questions that are secrets like this one SHOULDN'T be allowed if we had a trivia bot. They're secrets, so if the answer is spurted out...well, it's not so secretive anymore. ;)

Bumping for justice - I think we need GENERAL trivia bot (not just osu! related), with moderated question add system. It sounds good to me.

Then it comes to a point that the question repeats, and people will already know the answer easily since it has been answered before, so, uh, we have to avoid that :|

I remember big chat channels being spammed constantly with shit because of this trivia crap, if this is seriously added to the game, just make another channel named Trivia, having a bot on #osu + everyone saying "asdadasd" "fisd" "fffffuuuu" or any other random word because that gives a 0,000001% chance to win without knowing the answer would be awful.
