Since I just got back at the moment of this new year, of course everyone is getting older and left osu behind and reality check on each pips, before it was like a peak during pandemic for years since everyone has nothing to do with how to get a job. Back to it around pandemic time I was glad that youtube content and watching bunch of streamer in facebook and twitched osu... I am so glad that they active enough to fill the era in 2018 to 2020 it will be nostalgic for me that those old player still playing this, you are heck of a Pillar! And for my local members in facebook gc THANK YOU FOR THE FUN AND TIME THAT WE SPENT, hoping we could still be playing this game even if we are gettin older... keep in touch bros!

:D

yeahhh since the pandemic, less players are invested in the game but it's totally normal

I had a #1 score on Lazer both in-game and lazer's site, and less than a day later I checked back and magically some days-old scores from others appear and bumped me down.

I don't know what the deal is with stable and lazer still being split, but it's definitely not encouraging me to try to come back to osu! in any serious manner. I was completely thrown off by a comment on X from ppy(?) where both Stable and Lazer will continue to be supported equally and it was the person's choice which one to use, which implies the switch isn't happening anytime soon. I hop on lazer to play a few songs to test hardware every now and then since Lazer natively supports tablets, MIDI, and Linux, so right now osu! makes a good benchmark for odd hardware if anything :p

I hear of top-score cheaters and mapping drama too as of recently which is kind of off-putting.

i doubt that they magically appeared out of nowhere

depends on when are you comparing it to, to the pandemic?, yes, it absolutely has less players, but everything does, to before the pandemic?, osu! still has more players

Pulled from thin air and only applied less than a day later after I rechecked? No idea what happened. I was happy I had the #1 spot, double-checked to make sure I had the spot (site and ingame), went to bed, woke up, rechecked, and some score 3 days older than mine was #1 https://lazer.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/1514712

I'm pretty sure it said 3 days in-game but even the lazer site reports that differently. All I know is that I had #1, and some hours later #6 with older scores now in-front.

Lazer leaderboards are NOT accurate, if you want to submit you should do it on stable, lazer leaderboards are running like 2 months behind, so old scores are yet to appear in lazer, that is what happened here

i mean i've never noticed a lack of players compared from 2018-2020 and then 2020-2021 and now. Osu has never had millions of players playing it and is niche.

there are always around 10-20k players online so it's very niche yeah...

if osu! was a steam game, it would be constantly inside the top 100 most played games, having a similar playercount ot games like ark or bloons td 6, which is, actually pretty damn good

Might be somewhat Off-Topic, but ive always felt that for the wider userbase, osu! is a type of game which often gets played for a little while before being put down. My school friends have picked up osu! as a month long thing to do in VC, before they got bored and left. This has happened multiple times in my school, a small osu! trend amongst 5 or 6 people before it dies again. YouTubers also do this, and their fans come and try the game, only to put it down a while later.

So, we always get more players, but actually active players often leak out.

currently there are more players who join than players who quit, which is already good

I discovered osu! when I saw a friend playing it on Xfire. Adding it to Steam would definitely boost player count a bit, but then you introduce the Steam community who will come in droves for a free game, good music, and anime girls.

Being able to pay Supporter through Steam Wallet might be kind of nice too, along with easier downloading for Linux (not dealing with a random AppImage in the Downloads folder).

Steam API integration would be neat for song names and hopping into spectating from the friend's list. I wonder what the Steam rules would be about music title broadcasting since it's no-effort to create some offensive horror as a title temporarily.

The only game I know of with a lot of custom songs and a large backing is Beat Saber, and I'm guessing the only reasons it isn't a horror-show is that it has a price tag, requires a hardware set-up that generally implies maturity, and anime girls only through technical set-up with mods, avatars, and models (you gotta work for it :p). osu! has a far-lower barrier for entry.

I liked osu! before I became aware of people doing maps I thought were impossible. No point in trying to compete with that, and clicking circles without improving got old years ago. I play osu! now as a quick stresser and occasional hardware tester, and I'm the only one from a small group of friends who's even looked at osu! in the last few years.

I think osu! is good in small communities and groups for the competition; competing with friends at parties, playing randomly at the library or school, and just generally comparing and watching gameplay from other, local, real people.

What is there to work towards on osu! if you aren't competing for rank? I get more value out of DDR or Beat Saber since they have a fitness aspect.

I think that is true for most competitive games

I didn't say that osu! should be on steam, it would be a nightmare due to the copyright infrigement things. I was just saying that osu! playercount was incredibly high still
