New Osu!(lazer) update feels bad

There were a lot of great changes in the Nov30 update, but one I am not a fan of is the HP drain rate changes.

The bottom line: it's really frustrating to be failing songs that I was able to complete before. We are talking almost a full star in difficulty in change.

I only have so much time out of my day to be able to play Osu, so most would consider me a very casual player. I just want to hop on and play a couple of my favorite songs after work, and maybe get better in the process.

Some of you will say that the solution is to get better. I do not get better very quickly, because I do not practice often. I also don't play with the intent to get better; I play to have fun. Being set back to what I was nearly 3 months ago does not make me want to play this game anymore. It's discouraging.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Gameplay & Rankings would really love to have your opinion. Peppy, as well, would love to have your opinion and he can be reached in a myriad of ways, all of which are pretty easily searchable. This isn't the subforum you want for discussions about game updates.

Experiencing the same thing. It was fun, but the new update made it too hard.

i've moved this to G&R.

In terms of the changes, this was intended to make it closer in parity to the current Stable client. HP is always a difficult one because lots of people have different opinions on how it should work.

There's almost definitely a discussion on the github about it, so have a look there 👀

Wholly agree. I am in the same boat where I play very casually. Part of the reason why I preferred lazer to stable was that I felt the stable HP drain was unreasonably low to begin with. Failing maps with 85%+ ACC and being unable to gain any HP after 100% for a full minute just wasn't fun. Lazer isn't a competitive game mode anyways so I don't really see the point in matching HP drain with stable. I would at least like to see a slider in the settings where users can localize the HP drain, so that users have more control on their own experience. I think that would be a much healthier solution than having to play every single map on no-fail, like someone else suggested.

On the contrary, I play casually and stopped playing Lazer previously because in being too easy compared to Stable, it lacked any challenge in clearing anything and was unrewarding to play.

Different opinions and perspectives which is fine, felt it'd be worthwhile to add the other side of this.

I don't get why people would complaint it's getting drained too fast. I returned after years of break and I am playing songs that I had difficulty with before and clearing them. It's not that I got better, the life drain is especially low. It's not opinions at this level. Just people complaining hard about things because they don't want to fail. Just go NF

It seems like we're making the same point then. If you were playing lazer, you likely weren't playing competitively and were playing for fun. You didn't have fun because you thought the maps were too easy. This is valid, and this just reinforces my point that players should then be able to localize difficulty/drain to maximize their enjoyment. It has no drawbacks since its not like rank or pp or anything would be stored.

I see some people here suggesting that people who think that if some maps are a little bit too hard, you should just play NF, and that would be fine, but there is one major gripe I have with NF: I think plays with NF should only receive 50% of the score and the NF tag if the player would have failed during the play. Like you said, I like maps that challenge me as well. I have fun with maps that I'm not always able to pass 100% of the time. It feels reductive and demeaning to have plays that I would have failed categorized the same as plays I would have passed. Those are my thoughts at least, and I'd be interested to hear what others think.
