update: it looks like there's uniform disagreement here, pls archive this
also to anyone finding this from elsewhere (why) please remember that this is just a music game

The beginners would have hard time playing maps with no hitsounds at all (i.e, muted). Even in dump maps, I think having feedback is still essential for this.

while in theory this would make some sense in ctb (like a Little bit) for example, sadly enough allowing silent hitsound maps will destroy the rhythm aspect of the game entirely, you're basically saying that we should allow mappers to get rid of the only feedback that players have. i don't see how this would benefit, after all as you've said - it's customizable and you are offered a choice to disable hitsounds and even change their volume to 0%

edit: also yeah ^ beginners will literally die thinking that they're not hitting anything at all
edit 2: may that one bn who said that 5% hs maps should be rankable come forward and explain why? also perchance it's a hitsounder's problem that they don't know how to hitsound your maps, or as it is being said nowadays - skill issue

even if your creating a new layer you should be able to hitsound it so it sounds like it compliments the song, if not either the rhythm or the hitsounding needs to changed, not just deleting them

The only reason I can come up as for why they would disable hitsounds (other than them being annoying), is because players could use IRL feedback (keyboard sounds, the feeling of tapping) to check their offset to the song. IIRC, this is why osu!mania doesn't have hitsounding requirements (although this could be considered "relatively recent"?)

You could just counter this reason by saying it's optional, so both parties can be happy; one by keeping them enabled, and the other by disabling them.

Just like mania, maybe this would've passed if the game didn't use hitsounds from the beginning...

Perhaps this could also pass if there was an agreement to say that, as long as proper feedback is given to the players (ie. silencing ends of kick sliders (refer to left on community/forums/topics/470582 ) that don't land on active sounds), then it would be good enough?

this is probably the only time ive seen someone express the opinion that hitsounds sound bad for gameplay or that additive rhythms sound off when hitsounded

perhaps its just something thats more prevalent in higher skill caps but generally i think most people find it oddly rage inducing when a map has silenced hitsounds or additive rhythms without any hs feedback (see natsu maps or monstratas hikouki gumo)

im probably more of an extremist in this case as i would unironically prefer for every piece of objects including sliderends to have hs feedback and i also use a skin with extremely loud hitsounds since i simply dont feel comfortable playing without hs at all

i dont think this proposal could ever really make it through unless an option was implemented into the game to ignore a maps set hs volumes (which would be great peppy add it to lazer thx), currently if you want to have this unhitsounded experience i dont see why you cant just play without hitsounds enabled? thats an actual option you have unlike ignoring map volumes

also think even moving "maps must be hitsounded" from rules to guidelines would actually have a negative impact by just giving mappers incentive to "be creative" in a way i really dont see any positive gain in, and that i can guarantee at least a majority of players would agree heavily worsens their gameplay experience

> perhaps its just something thats more prevalent in higher skill caps

dont think thats the case since many high rank players (including myself) play with pretty loud hs volumes usually louder than the music volume and most players i know find it extremely annoying to play maps with really quiet or silenced hitsounds. there are exceptions of course but the majority prefer audible hitsounds.

i also agree with what usaha said, if you cant hitsound a rhythm i think thats more of a your rhythm problem rather than hitsounding
Basensorex
@nanoya thats exactly what i said? sry if i somehow worded it wrong but what i was saying was that higher skill cap players specifically use higher hs volume

there are also vaguer reasons, which are subjective and harder to word but probably more powerful. when i try to play my own maps with hitsounds it feels wrong, like there's a 2nd music track being played over the artist's intended one.
As someone who's been playing a bunch of rhythm games for years, including games w/ prominent keysound feedback (e.g. Groove Coaster, NOSTALGIA) and games that don't have keysound support at all (e.g. jubeat or basically everything on my Android device because it's Android lol) alike...

I can confidently say that if you play a non-hitsounded map w/ hitsounds or vice versa and it feels "wrong", it means that there's an issue with the map design itself, not the hitsound mechanics.

In osu! specifically, mappers such as tieff and LKs as well as maps such as BASARA [Luca] have demonstrated that you can have your map to not follow the song 1:1 — be it through additive rhythms or whatever — and still makes up for a good sense when played either w/ the map's hitsounds, w/ the typical "pro player skin" ping-pong hitsounds, or even w/o hitsounds at all. And then there's also the recently qualified soiree as well, if you want a more "extreme" example of this.

Given the circumstances, unfortunately I don't see this suggestion as realistic to be implemented.

this seems to be ~the consensus view here, which is fine and about what i expected. (tho i didnt expect this to get so many responses in a day :p)
