I would like to add that although aqo's list is more updated, this list contains some maps for true beginners players as well.

I'm working on that as we speak! Level 0 and Level -1 added! \:D/

This list has two goals:

1. To help beginners learn the game by making it easy for them to find maps to progress on, with accurate difficulty sorting all the way from the bottom. (feedback from actual beginners would be very welcome!)

2. To help ET players from other games find the more interesting (for them) charts quickly without having to dig through a lot of easy maps.
For ET player, level 10 = easy, level 11 = normal, level 12 = hard. although I might stretch it out more in the future, and break it into a wider level range once I start adding unranked charts.

3. To be as accurate as possible. (Although opinions will always differ between players)

Wow, negative difficulty levels.. Way to make new players feel good about themselves

Some feedback from what I would consider my intended range of play. Take into account that I don't think I'm particularly good or bad at anything (except jack's, god I suck at those), therefore I don't feel like I'm biased towards certain map types.
Level 04:
I can pass all the songs, there are however 2 that I feel are much harder than the others:
- Pendulum - The Island (MaxNRG Remix) [7K The Island - Insane]
- Tamura Yukari - Fantastic future (TV Size) [7K Liese's LV.24]
Level 05:
I can pass al the songs except, kors k - smooooch [4K MX] the SV changes I find both both random and ridiculous.
Again there are 2 songs that I feel are much harder than the others:
- senya - Utakata, Ai no Mahoroba [LV.28] (I have to ignore half the holds to pass this)
- Aoi Eir - INNOCENCE (TV Size) [Lv.26]
Also this might just be me but KOTOKO - unfinished (TV Size) [7K Burst] Is probably good in here in terms of difficulty, it is however way higher in terms of required stamina, took me an insane amount of attempts to pass (although I can do so now reliably).
Level 06:
Can pass everything except Lin-G - I Want You [7K RD] (insane HP drain) and Tamura Yukari ft motsu from m.o.v.e - You & Me [7k Maximum]. I am however closish to passing both.
On the other hand I feel like there are 4 songs that are absurdly easy compared to others (easier than level 5 songs):
- Yuuna Sasara feat. Tai no Kobone - Imperishable Night 2006 [7K Hard]
- LeaF - MEPHISTO [Roxas' MX]
- TeamGrimoire+Amaneko - croiX [Roxas' MX]
- Ryu* - I'm so Happy [S.Star's 7K EXHAUST Lv.15]
Level 07:
Can pass every thing except KOTOKO - WING OF ZERO [7K Insane], Laura Shigihara - Brainiac Maniac [Xin_U's 7K Insane] and fripSide - future gazer (TV Size) [Rumi's 7K MX]. The 3 of them have very high HP drain, but then again so does pretty much everything on this level.
As for what I can pass, the are 3 songs that I feel are significantly easier than the rest:
- Lite Show Magic - Crack traxxxx [4K EXH] which is not even the hardest diff for me (7K INF being a lot harder).
- xi - Akasha [7K Hard]
- Ryu* - I'm so Happy [4K EXHAUST Lv.15]
Level 08:
Can't pass anything on this level (and I'm not even close to doing it) with one exception: Anamanaguchi - STILL SPLODIN' THO (Interlude) [HanzeR's Insane]. This seems much easier than anything on level 7 or even 6 (except the aforementioned too easy for level 6 songs).

Also, I don't feel like the gap in difficulty between any of the 4k maps in levels 4-7 is very big at all, and they shouldn't be spread more than 1 level apart (2 at most). This said, I'm not very knowledgeable about 4k so take that with a grain of salt.

It seems like your idea of difficulty is more oriented towards "how hard is the map to pass", whereas this list is more something like "how hard is this map to play well". Maps like LeaF - MEPHISTO [Roxas' MX] are indeed incredibly easy to pass, but I don't think they're very easy to do a good accurate play on.

This list aims to be more towards rating difficulties of map layout and not of map settings. i.e. a map with a low drain setting will be easier to pass than a map with a harsher drain setting, but it doesn't change the fact that the map itself is harder to play right without having to spam in many parts.

So my next step is Level 10 huh.

I understand what you are coming from but from the point of view of someone gradually going from one level to next as he manages to pass the maps it doesn't make that much sense. When you can't even play a chart because you just die 20 seconds in or die 3/4ths throuh at 85% accuracy because of the hp drain while you can complete the rest of the songs in the level you have to be left wondering what went wrong.

Regardless of that, I feel my point still stands on some cases, let me ilustrate, I know you'd prefer score, but let me use accuray for simplicity, at the levels I'm exposing it doesn't change much.
LeaF - MEPHISTO [Roxas' MX] - I can do 85%+ accuracy no problem, I've only played it twice. level 6
Yuuna Sasara feat. Tai no Kobone - Imperishable Night 2006 [7K Hard]. ~84% accuray, played it 3 times, level 6
Ryu* - I'm so Happy [S.Star's 7K EXHAUST Lv.15] - played 3 times 84-87.5%, level 6
Pendulum - The Island (MaxNRG Remix) [7K The Island - Insane] - played it and wiped a lot on this, to date my best playthrough is 84.6%, rest are betwen ~81-83% this is level 4
Tamura Yukari - Fantastic future (TV Size) [7K Liese's LV.24] pretty much the same as the last one. but ranges from 78.8-84.2%, level 4 aswell.
senya - Utakata, Ai no Mahoroba [LV.28] - barely scrape 80.6% most are below 80%. Again quite a few plays, level 5
Aoi Eir - INNOCENCE (TV Size) [Lv.26] - have only passed it once, with probably around 10 attempts, 82%, level 5
Lite Show Magic - Crack traxxxx [7K INF]] - have passed this 3 times, probably around 20+ attemts, 77-78%, level 6
Lite Show Magic - Crack traxxxx [4K EXH]] - have passed this 7 times, around 8 or 9 attempts I'd guess?, 80-83%, level 7

Now, this inconsistency is maybe something that only happens at my level of play, and if the list is intended for people who can 98%+ all the songs then my point obviously doesn't stand as I have no way to claim anything one way or the other. However as you are listing from level -1 I can't help but think this isn't the intent.

When should we consider a song "passed" and be ready to move on to the next song on the list? B? A? S?

Damn, I can only make it 2/3 through the very first Level -1 song. I feel pathetic.

By all means, if you're just starting out, just go ahead and download all ranked osu!mania maps (there's aren't that many) and play their [Easy]/[Normal] difficulties which should be easy enough for a complete beginner. Once you got at least A on any map, the next time you play it play it with random mod. After about two-three weeks you should already be able to play the stuff in level -1 pretty well. From there, the progression between every two levels is around two weeks of playing if you play an average of 2 hours a day. You should also play maps in higher levels with HT to get used to new patterns quickly.

Don't clinge too much to that improvement rate though. Sadly, everyone naturally improves at different rates at these type of games. You can influence it a bit by doing more effort etc, but it won't make you suddenly learn 5x faster. My point is, what's important is your own improvement, not so much how you compare to others.

Though if you want to do better even though your natural learning rate is not so fast by eg spending more time, be prepared to be called nolifer. Most people only look up to natural talent, I do not think that is right and I have several reasons for it, but a full rant on this mentality is probably not appropriate here.

Nice list, although I play unranked maps I don't tend to put much effort into them so entozer's list doesn't work too greatly for me. I do feel a bit pathetic failing some of the level 2 songs though. If I could suggest a change it would be that there is one more tier for beginners, there are some very fun songs that I enjoy playing that aren't on this list such as "Gigantic O.T.N Normal"

Seems like it, but tbh it's pretty much up to you to see whether you've "cleared" a level or not. Furthermore, mania is quite different compared to std in the sense that there are many playstyles in which players unvoluntarily specializes, meaning some maps are (sometimes FAR) easier for player A who's good at chords but harder for player B who is used to streams although they both clear the same "level" of map.

Just taking myself as example : I can easily score an A on ChaiN De/structioN [Another] (Level 8) but have a hard time getting even 87% on Akasha [Hard] (Level 7) just because they don't feature the same kind of patterns.

Or in the same "Level" (i.e. : Level 6) I can S Days of Dash [MX] but rarely get an A on Utakata, Ai no Mahoroba [LV.28].

So yeah this list is pretty much like the one you've linked for std without saying "consider you've reached the next level if you've cleared everything before with an A or S with 93%+". :>

Yeah, because there are so many different skills that patterns can test, there will always be some patterns that are either much easier for you, or much harder. Some people have low endurance, others are unnaturally good at jacks, some are able to sightread speed changes that seem impossible.

I've never liked the idea of picking an arbitrary score value, or accuracy level to consider a "pass"/"clear" on this sort of thing. HP and OD settings here complicate things quite a bit. If you take a map, and make 2 difficulties, one with HP5 and OD5, and another with HP9 OD9, and compare your score/accuracy they will be very different, but that doesn't mean you played the HP9/OD9 one any worse. Creating some sort of score or accuracy requirement and calling it a pass would mean that any maps with a low OD would be easier to get that score, even if the patterns are harder than another map in the same difficulty level with a higher OD (Unless the high OD map also has patterns you find really easy).

I focus on my own scores. When I find a map with has patterns I'm particularly bad at, I take that into account when I look at my scores. I won't expect myself to be able to get the same sort of score i would on a map with patterns that aren't as hard for me even if they're considered to be the same level in some sort of difficulty ranking. As long as I played my hardest, and I feel like the score I got is the best possible score I could manage right now (without grinding replays on the song) I'm happy. Ideally, I want to always get a better score the next time I play something, but I'm very inconsistent, so sometimes it can take me months to beat a score, even if I just beat a whole bunch of my other top scores on other things.

This isn't a skill test or a practice map thread or anything like that.
