Welcome to
10K+ Playstyle Spotlight 1
- TopRow -

What is this?

The 10K+ Playstyle Spotlight is a new monthly event designed to shed light upon lesser-known 10K+ playstyles by encouraging you all to create maps for them. Each month, we'll curate a map pack with any submitted maps made for the respective playstyle. After 3 weeks, the pack will be uploaded, and players will have a chance to set scores, which will be tallied for a score attack portion of the event.

Month 1: TopRow

This month, we're putting TopRow in the spotlight! TopRow is an interesting playstyle that exclusively uses the top row of keys. It's unique among other 10K+ playstyles due to being fully dynamic, as there is no "resting position" or "rows". You just let your fingers flow on the keyboard. The main way to play is to use 6 fingers and treat it like a weird variant of 6K where you can move your hands around, but beware that there will sometimes be patterns that encourage the inclusion of pinkies, making it 8 fingers!

Example Keybinds by DealerOfMelons

This playstyle was pioneered by Nivrad00 in the map Maxo & Ehiorobo - Bedside, which was made for MaMaChaCha PHASE FIVE. Later, Nao - Make It Out Alive ft. SiR was also made by Nivrad00 for MaMaChaCha PHASE BETA. Go check those maps out if you want a good example of the roots of TopRow.
...Or you could watch this awesome showcase of Bedside, played by Dessie!

But that's not all, Dessie and I have created a brand new mapset just for this spotlight! The map is Akira Complex - Infinity Stage Theme and features a few difficulties. The harder difficulties are intense, so they might not be the best to start off with, but don't worry, we're not total monsters — we added some easier diffs for newcomers to enjoy and get a taste of the playstyle too! Here's a play of the hardest diff in the set, again done by Dessie.

On another note, you may know that there was some unfortunate news regarding the artist of this song that we were only made aware of while creating this map. However we have decided to complete this set in honour of them and their music.

How and why should I participate?

This event is open to anyone with 10 or more fingers. If you want to participate, simply join The 10K+ Discord Server and make your way to the Playstyle Spotlights category. There you will find channels to post your maps and scores, and you can also chat with others about the playstyle or get feedback on your maps. Any participants for the map pack will also receive a special role on the server to show their contribution!

If you would like to play the event maps, first download one of the skins from this sheet. You can then try out one of the previously mentioned maps, or any of the maps that have been submitted to the "Maps" sheet. Also, the map pack has now been uploaded, so you can just download all the maps here!

If you decide to participate in the score attack, your scores will be added to the sheet and your scores will be put against others for some friendly competition! More on that later.

If you would like to participate in the TopRow map pack, here are a couple things to know:
- Set the style to 7K Co-op in the editor for 14K.
- Design your map so that it comfortably accommodates 6 (and sometimes 8) fingers.
- Utilize note placement to guide finger positioning, making sure that it's easy for the player to understand where their fingers should move on the keyboard to hit your patterns comfortably.
- Post your maps in the designated mapping channel and ping Konomi or Dessie to have them added to the sheet.
- You will have until the 21st UTC to complete your maps. Late submissions will still be added to the pack but won't be part of the score attack portion.

Hello! I've made a pattern glossary for TopRow 14K for fun! You may refer to this for getting ideas! Hope to see what you guys will come up next!

Pattern Glossary

Boundary
Referring to the last three keys on each hands!

Jump
The act of moving your hands to other keys of significant distance

Travel
The act of slightly moving your hands one or two keys away from the original position. It looks like the hand is walking (or travelling) across the keys, hence the name!

Crosshands
The act of moving one of your hand to the other side of your other hand. For example, moving your left hand to the right of the right hand, or moving your right hand to the left side of your left hand. Your arms should be crossing each other doing this, hence the name!

Hand Switches (not included in Infinity Stage Theme)
Similar as SOUNDWiTCH pattern in Arcaea or Foot Switches in ITG Tech, this is the act of hitting travelling/jumping trills, but at some patterns, some of the trills look like minijack. For example, when trying to hit 1 3 3 5, you might be expected to use left-right-left-right hand instead of jacking the 3s.

LN Switches (not included in Infinity Stage Theme)
Similar to Wadats in ITG Tech, this is the act of switching which hand is holding down the LN. Remember that all that matters to hit LNs are to keep the respective key pressed, but it does not matter what you hold it down with! You can try to practice this with Crosshand Stage, but it may not be ideal to do on every crosshand patterns

EDIT: We changed the mappools and added a new event!

Hello, wanna thank everyone again for submitting maps for the event! Here's a list of the maps that got accepted to the pack! They can also be seen in the TopRow sheets!

Unfortunately, there were 3 maps that didn't quite make the pack!
- PUP - DVP [Impact]
- d0llywood1 - imallovertheplace (feat. twikipedia) [I see things at night that arent real when i dont take my meds]
- 69 de 74 feat. Komiya Mao - Stand Up!! Stand Up!! [14K Extra]

Due to them having not-so-playable patterns (Arms for example)! That's not to say that they're unplayable though!

The links to the missing maps can be found here:
  1. PUP - DVP [beatmapsets/2019173#mania/4204800]
  2. d0llywood1 - imallovertheplace (feat. twikipedia) [beatmapsets/2019554]
  3. 69 de 74 feat. Komiya Mao - Stand Up!! Stand Up!! [https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1120978536077991957/1124627241976987738/69_de_74_feat._Komiya_Mao_-_Stand_Up_Stand_Up.osz]
And now, it's time for us to start the Score Attack and Conquer Challenge events!

Score Attack Event

What is Score Attack event?
Here is where people will compete for the highest scores on a selection of maps that we had selected from the map submissions during the past 3 weeks! We will rank the highest scores from each player, and from there, players will get placement ranks! The overall top players for this event will be determined by their total placement scores, where the lower their total placement score is, the better! Aim for No.1 ranks on each map to get a better chance at winning!
Any maps that participating players had missed during this event will be marked as them getting 0 scores on that map and thus will be guaranteed last place on that respective map. Make sure to play every map even if you're not good at them!

Recommended for:
  1. Players who are only starting to learn to play TopRow
  2. Players who love to go for higher scores
  3. Players who just want to play more chill maps
List of Maps for Score Attack (check that you get the correct difficulty!)
  1. Yuki Kajiura - Sis Puella Magica! [Expert+]
  2. Niv - drum 'n' moose [drum]
  3. Remo-con - Matt Silver [NORMAL]
  4. -45 - G e n g a o z o [Past]
  5. glass beach - yoshi's island [sleeping seals]
  6. PUP - DVP [Velocity]
  7. Roses Epicurean - Nightmare -Overture- [Dream]
Regarding Mods Usage
Forbidden Mods: V2, Random, Auto
Yes, this means that you can actually use NF, Easy or HT mods for this event! Just remember that your rankings will be based on scores though!

Conquer Challenge Event

What is Conquer Challenge event?
It's actually quite similar to Score Attack in a way, but this time, we will only be checking your grade as well as the speed mods that you have used!
Similarly to Score Attack, we will only be calculating everyone's total points for the event with the highest points the player had gotten for each map! The rankings of the players for the event will be determined by their total number of points obtained! In this case, the higher the points, the better!

Calculations for the points will be done like this:
Points per map: Grade Obtained * speed mods used (HT/DT/NC/None)

Points Conversion:

I wonder what your strategy for this event will be like?

Recommended for:
  1. Players who are more experienced in TopRow
  2. Players who prefer to only care about passing rather than scoring
  3. Players who love a good challenge
List of Maps for Conquer Challenge (check that you get the correct difficulty!)
  1. Daniel Olsen - Transonic Gravity [14k]
  2. Frums - Credits [Travel Challenge]
  3. SHK - Switronic [!~Mission~!]
  4. Dagashi O-gata feat. KAFU - Transient Euphoria [umm uhh]
  5. Usushioshisuu- tsurrai! yabai! tsurai! [14k]
  6. Aiobahn - Unwelcome School (Aiobahn Remix) [14k]
  7. keshi kasu - kanry [14k]
Regarding Mods Usage
Forbidden Mods: V2, Random, Auto, Easy, NoFail
This time, we're not so welcoming with mods that make things easier to fail other than HT!
Just remember, a D HT grade is still better than no points at all, so try your best to get as many points as you can!

The links to the pack that will contain these maps are here: https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2030840

Of course, feel free to play the other maps not included in the score attack! I'm sure the mappers will appreciate it!
