Increasing my Skill in Osu! (3*- 4*)

Hi! :> (sorry if I waffle or am hard to understand, !tldr! I just was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to gradually prepare oneself to pass 4 star maps with decent accuracy (I am currently a mid 3 star player))

I recently started playing Osu more seriously, about 2 weeks ago. I was originally able to play 2 star maps decently, and I am now able to easily fc. I decided to try playing 3 star maps at a very low difficulty (3.05*) and was beginning to get used to the speed and the ar of these maps, and as of yet have recently been increasing the star rating by little over the past week, to a rating I am able to pass with good accuracy (95%) or fc. The maps I now currently play are around the range of 3.2-3.6 maps, 3.7* pushing my limits but I am still usually able to pass (not with the best acc).
I was wondering if anyone had any advice rather on how to possibly achieve better accuracy’s and combos on higher starred maps that would help to prepare me for 4* in the future. (Beatmap suggestions would be great 😎) 💗 Or any other related advice on preparing oneself for 4* maps (I’m unable to pass them without HT so I am more curious on the type of experience, what to expect, what tech is included in them etc).
I’m sorry if I waffled a bit, this is my first time posting on the forum and I can sometimes blabber on >~<.
Thanks so much !

You should play “hyper” difficulties and maybe 3 stars around your range that have a higher BPM.

:D okay I will try that

As far as general skill increase, you're on the right track. Don't be afraid to try 4* maps (especially if a map or song interests you), but so long as you don't put them as your metric of skill or success (as opposed to what you can more consistently/comfortably FC/95%) it should be fine. If you can pass 3.7* (even with poor acc.), I can suggest a couple of goals:
-Adding in more 3.8* maps, with the main intention to just pass them or get over 90%
-Pulling your lower end up so that 3.5*'s are your lower band for typical play and the 3.2-3.4*'s are easier
-Solidifying your skill inside that 3.2-3.6* band so that they're full of high-acc FC's.

Once you get into the 3*'s (and especially the upper 3*'s) maps start to get a lot more diverse and show the prototypical patterns that you'll see more often at higher stars (jumps, bursts/streams, tech, high-velocity sliders, etc.). If you feel confident in one of those types more than the other there's no reason you can't jump to 3.8, 3.9 or 4* for that. You can also up the BPM as Furry Hater said. I don't really have specific beatmap suggestions, though.

Also, that's fine for your first post. You were mostly on-topic in regards to where you were, your problem and what you wanted from us. I personally would avoid stuff like the ">~<" face as that's usually not conducive to forum posts or pure typing interactions, but that's just me. Just keep in mind that vocalizations and facial expressions which may be easier to pick up on in audio chat or IRL conversations can look awkward and confusing when converted to a type-chat format (hence why anyone who tries to do those *does an action* stuff in regular chats and not in a specifc RP-like format tends to be seen as cringey.)

Thankyou a lot Voidedosu, this is extremely helpful advice especially as far as what to expect in higher star maps, and also about the tip on raising pushing my limits to the point where it is passable/ 90% acc + which will then in turn slowly increase my “comfort” play higher. I had never thought of it like this, although I was similarly doing a similar thing I was not conscious of it.

And for “tech” what exactly is tech?

Oh and yes noted, I won’t use kaomojis etc in future posts, I agree with your points on that. aha sorry

As Voideosu already mentioned, there is a lot of diversity in the skillsets present in higher star maps. So my advise would be to play lots of different types of patterns. It's fine to focus on one niche if you enjoy it more than others, but it's good to have some baseline level of each of your fundamental skills (reading, aim, tapping). For practicing these skills I would recommend playing maps that challenge you in one of these, for example when you want to practice tapping it's better to play a map not too difficult reading-wise and aim-wise but challenging in tapping.

And to answer your second question. "Tech" is a term for rhythmically complex maps witch express the song by not only the placement and timing of notes but also through slider velocity, these maps often have intriguing slider shapes and unusual patterns. There also exists a term "light tech" used for maps with some tech elements, that aren't full on tech.

It's hard to find tech maps under 4*, but I've found a few maps that in my opinion represent what tech is well enough

Note that tech maps tend to be harder than their star rating suggests.

Old maps to improve skill lel :P

beatmapsets/7251#osu/31413 (watch out midway through, rest is fine I think)
beatmapsets/6505#osu/29456 (huge jumps, good for jump training :P)
beatmapsets/3210#osu/22106 (watch out for the burai slider o_O)
beatmapsets/235#osu/919 (maybe with DT on)
beatmapsets/1190#osu/12449 (watch out ar 4 o_o)
beatmapsets/19226#osu/77883 (ok I actually really like this one :3)
beatmapsets/129#osu/288 (CS7)
beatmapsets/874#osu/6097 (best map)
beatmapsets/85#osu/193 (ar4 rythm map)
beatmapsets/166#osu/422 (hard diff. is already really hard o_o)
beatmapsets/754#osu/5061 (long map + 132 bpm streams, offset: +10~+20, bpm:fine)
beatmapsets/4547#osu/24438 (might need some retries to reread odd patterns I think)

My advice would be to spend most of your time (80% or more) playing maps that you can get decent accuracy on (95% or fc). This will help you build good habits to make sure you read and aim for every circle correctly without skipping them.

Every now and then (20% of the time) you can push for higher difficulty maps if you feel like it. Occasionally playing harder maps than normal will ease you into being more comfortable with them while still allowing you to retain good habits. Playing harder maps is optional though. If you don't feel like it then its perfectly fine to slowly increase the difficulty over time.

Good luck!
