In my interpretation, linear patterns are more commonly in older maps which are in straight lines / 90 degree angles and very low spacing. Generally, they have the same 1/2 rhythm as jumps, but can have some finger control mixed in depending on the map. You can find a lot of maps with linear patterns in the easier diffs of maps on old jump map spreadsheets. It's not a very common term nowadays since linears aren't used often in modern mapping.
