How is it done? Some country names are wierd like "iran islamic republic of..." (cant see the whole name because its too long).

Shouldnt Sweden be called "Sweden the Christian kingdom of Svea rike" or something like that?

i think they just pick them based on ethnicity, the people in charge, descriptions of the land, etc
it is their country so they can name it whatever they want after all lol

Why the UK is not simply named "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" ???

It should be based on the ISO 3166 if I recall correctly

thats just codes for the names tho
like united kingdom is GBR for example
i think they are used to make it easier for everyone to know what countries are being talked about even when in different languages, much like how latin is still used for scientific names of animals

Yes those in charge can name their country anything as long as they follow what ISO 3166 says but Iran is the country name everyone knows that.

"Islamic/Islam" is the name of the state religion excluding minorities.
"Republic" is the government form.
"Of" is a word these are not a name.

So some countries in the world send wierd country names to the ISO 3166 that isnt a name but rather a poltical will what the country should be like. Its as if Putin decided to submit the country name Russia: The country of leather and spanking because he like leather and spanking. Still leather and spanking is not a name, its a poltical will.

But as long as its consistently bad country naming I dont mind but.. ISO 3166 seriously need to update their standard. Im looking forward to some random dictator in Chad to adding the whole bible after the country name and it get accepted. I need to read through this ISO and see what it actually says but apperently you can add anything after the actual name and then osu! will apply that ISO standard even if it make no sense.

"Why the UK is not simply named "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" ???".
To make it even more salty make it: "The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Falklands islands" instead.

I think it just depends on what the people deciding on how to represent their country. For mine, they got it's name from the current spanish king that ruled over them, Philip II. It shows how spanish culture has become ingrained with the filipino culture and the spanish's 333 year reign over us.
