According to "Beatmap ranking procedure" in the wiki, in order to get nominated for qualification of your beatmap you first need 5 "hypes".

So from what I understand, if you want a CHANCE for your beatmap to be qualified, first you need to be lucky enough for a bunch of random people to decide to download your map, then be lucky enough for at least 5 people to like it enough to give you a "hype", which most people aren't going to do even if they do enjoy it.

But just posting "Look at me!!!!" "Look at my beatmap!!!!!!1" in the forums is annoying to everyone and won't get you far anyway.

How does anybody get their beatmap ranked if (from what I can tell) this is the system?
Sorry if I sound a bit immature writing this.

hypes are honestly the easiest part, literally anyone can give you a hype and most of the time just getting mods will get you most if not all of them if your map is decent enough to be rankable. after that just post in hype queues (mod queues made solely to give out hypes) if you dont have friends who you can ask to just drop hypes on your map real quick.

So should you have just one person modding it, or several if you can?

sometimes random ppl show up on the stuff i upload and hype it

sometimes random ppl show up and hype the map while it's qualified which is endearing but process-wise ultimately useless

if i need 5 hypes or so relatively quickly i usually just ask friends. each user has 10 hypes that periodically regenerate so they're not a hard currency to come by lo

make good maps and people will come, its really as simple as that. Doesnt necessarily mean itll get ranked, but if you make a good map you'll 100% get 5 hypes before too long

Worth noting this is by far the easiest step of ranking a map btw

that is absolutely not how it works

far too many maps are uploaded every day for any meaningful number of people to find any given unranked map unless they know the mapper or the song beforehand

whether you can get hypes is way more of a question of having friends than one of mapping ability

but making good maps is how you get people to share your maps, mapping sub to you, make a name for yourself in mapping com, get people to want to gd for u etc etc it all ads up in the end. idk how else im gaining popularity slowly

Basically you just need friends to have these 5 hypes or simply ask random people to hype your beatmap so you will hype their maps/they will hype your beatmap because they think that it's good.

Qualified people will give you tips on how to make your map even better or help you add some stuffs to make the game experience better. Beatmap Nominators will recognize your beatmap and help you to put it with others ranked maps.

it's one way, not THE way

it's also, again, not something u can rely on to build a reputation from 0

if no one knows who u are, ur maps won't spread by word of mouth => u need song buff or socialisation in the beginning

u can also do many of the things u mentioned on a small scale without being very good just by making friends

ALSO these goalposts are way wider than the initial "how to get hype" with the context of a very new mapper with 0 presence

If you want to get hypes and also popularity, a good start is to go in multiplayer lobbies with host rotate, then put your map, and eventually ask for feedback

alsoo asking for testplay (and feedback if you want) in chat channels like #mapping or #osu, and public discord mapping servers

Hypes are usually the easiest thing to get, then comes like 10 more steps before you can rank your map.
