Should I only play songs that I can get a high rank on?

Title pretty much.

Is it more efficient to just play songs that I can finish with ~90% accuracy at a B or A rank, or should I challenge myself with harder songs, that I can only finish at a C with 70-80% accuracy? 2-2.5 star is my comfy zone right now for finishing songs accurately. I can finish some 3-3.5 star songs at a C rank between 70 and 80% accuracy, but I'm wondering if it's even worth playing them at all? Or if that's just a waste of time.

perfecting songs at your skill level is the one if you wanna actually improve

hard disagree on that one.
perfecting something isn't efficient at all, if you want to get better don't pussy out and play maps you have a hard time on, maps that take your full focus to complete, maps that tire you out. that's the route every top player chooses

Ya see this is why I asked this question. I started learning piano about a year ago, and everyone always says to learn songs at your skill level. Of course, you can't improve if you don't go outside of your comfort zone, but my question was more - how far outside of your comfort zone should you actually go? It's hard to just go up bit by bit on Osu, since most songs either jump straight from 2.5 to 3.5. There aren't a whole lot of just 3 star songs out there, and even then, some songs are more difficult than their star rating.

all maps are different, but more or less the star rating does correlate to the map difficulty, go by a star above your skill level.
tip: to know if you're not pushing yourself just ask yourself whether the map is easy or too boring, if the answer is yes go play harder maps.

get out of your comfort zone sometimes, that's how you improve. I'd recommend playing anything that you can B rank with +87% acc.

Just keep improving your own scores. The more scores you improve on, the better u generally get.

Maps that are way too hard are hard to improve on cuz you dont really know what you're doing and you could also develop bad habits that technically improves your score on those hard maps but wont do good when you're trying to get really good scores on them. Meanwhile maps that are way too easy are also hard to improve on because you're already nearing perfect scores on them.

If after playing a map, you play it again and you feel like you're more comfortable in it, then thats a good map for you right now to play on.

Beware that this changes on every play session, stuff u thought were good might get too easy, or could be bad on a bad day etc etc. You are NOT going to play with the same level of skill in every play session, popoffs and bad days WILL happen

Easiest way to find the right maps(though u can decide on whatever method): pick a mapset, pick a difficulty, too hard? Drop to a lower diff, too easy? Pick a harder diff. Yeah its that simple.

Hm, okay. It's just quite hard to find maps in between the 2.5-3 star range. Lower than 2.5 is far too easy for me right now. I can pretty much S rank those songs first time round. 3.5 stars are almost too hard, since I only manage about 70-80% accuracy on those ones (depending on the song since some I find are easier than others). But I feel like those ones make me think more. It's hard to find a middle ground right now since everything either feels too easy or too hard.

Push yourself, but don't push too far past your skill range!

i feel like it's important to go a bit slower in the beginning at 2* and early 3* and really get down the basics of the game, push yourself a little sometimes but learn how to get high acc on easier maps. once you've got that down, push yourself more often. just my opinion tho

I play maps mostly in my comfort zone and only venture off when there's a skill I want to improve, like cut streams or alternating at the moment. Or if I just want to practice a mod like HR.

The way I improved while at your rank was just by playing maps that had a lot of patterns and mapping techniques that I was comfortable with until I got pretty good at them, and did that for a long time, slowly increasing the average star rating I played. At some point my reading ability increased, I experimented with different AR, CS, OD, BPM, to really understand where my skill actually is and what needs improvement.

Occasionally in multis or just for fun, I'll go to 7* maps or high 6* and I just do not have any fun playing them. My enjoyment in osu! comes from playing maps that I can actually play, so that's what I do. Maps that are so difficult they're painful make me want to quit.

Obviously there's variation in difficult at higher star maps, like one 5.5* could be relatively easy however a tech 5.5* could be literally impossible to pass for many. Improvement came best for me by staying relatively close to my average star rating I played, only increasing by about 0.1 every so often.

Okay I think I rambled on enough 😅

You should focus more on acc than the rank grade. Generally, the accs that you should get before moving onto the next map is around 94%-98% depending on your preference. But since it looks like you're a beginner, you can be much more relaxed on the acc requirements and get a feel for the game first.

Haha, yeah I started a couple of days ago. Generally on 2-2.5 stars I can get 90-95% and S rank some of them. On 3+ it's usually anywhere between 70-85% depending on the song since I feel some 3 stars vary wildly in terms of difficulty (I have 88% on a 3.2 star). I feel my mouse control is good since I play a lot of overwatch, it's just the accuracy I struggle with tbf - I get quite a few 50s and 100s on the faster songs.
