[added] [Proposal] Allow songs using clipping as a sound design technique

My friend says that this song would be removed if uploaded because it uses clipping to give the sounds a distorted feeling. The song content rules disallow songs considered "Extremely and unbearably loud or excessively clipped." This means that even if one were to make an mp3 of this song quieter before uploading it, it would still be removed because it uses clipping. I see no good reason for this, and it might prevent me from uploading a song I want to map, so I think it should be changed.

One way to change it is removing the part of the rule against clipping. "Extremely and unbearably loud" mp3s would still be expressly disallowed this way.

I think the rule regarding excessive clipping should just be removed too, with more emphasization to be placed on the Extremely and unbearably loud clause. It is applied inconsistently (see pitch fucker) and has restricted even my own song choices in the past because I want to avoid the possible mute/beatmap deletion.

While excessive clipping is not sound for music production, the song content rules disallowing such tracks made little sense to me as

  1. It is not clear how much clipping is too much; and
  2. It restricts our choices.
So as long as the loudness is reasonable or tuned down to a reasonable level (at least to –9 LUFS personally), I won't say a word to excessive clipped tracks being ranked.

By the way: How loud is too loud? Should we standardize a specific LUFS level, and use the integrated method in EBU R 128 to catch tracks above that level? I would draw the line at a somehow relax –4 LUFS, but would a stricter standard be OK?

@McEndu: I agree that a definition of what counts as too loud would be nice, and I hope that is added eventually. Maybe open a post for discussion of that
