I am thinking about making a beatmap, but I am unsure of how to start. I would appreciate any advice that more experienced mappers could give me.

Choose the song, time it and map. No guide is good without you actually trying out first.

Good place to start would be reading this. It looks daunting and confusing, but take it one section at a time. If you try to read it all at once, youre going to get yourself confused.
