When I was in high school it was 8 hours of school every day and at least 4 hours of homework. We basically had no free time. I actually didn't do most of the homework for that reason.
Did anyone explicitly tell you to spend 4 hours doing homework every weekday?
You'd probably fail if you don't I'd imagine
They just gave a lot of homework, not specific time, but it was impossible to do it all even by spending the entire weekend working.
Most of them weren't scored so I didn't do them
What was their reason for giving so much homework that's not even graded? jeez
They're stupid

Are you sure they even expected you to do it? I get given loads of homework thats expected as revision eg doing past exams and its normally just given for the year
Yes, it's not like in uni where they say "you can do that", we basically spent class time correcting homework. They sometimes checked if we did it and even gave detention if not.
Unlike some countries where teacher is a well respected and well paid job here it's basically the worst thing you could do. Aside from a few who actually want to teach most end up doing that because they couldn't find anything else.
Hopefully that's not the case for uni.
