does anyone run a lynux based operating system or specifically Ubuntu cause i have spent a long time debating wether to switch from win8 to ubuntu/lynux but im not sure and today i decided i want to when win8 did something super stupid, basically does anyone know if osu does actually work on this system and what ver to use if it does, win or osx you get the idea.
thanks guys

Why do you want to switch to Ubuntu anyway?

osu! works on any Linux distributions, you just need to install few things and configure here and there to make it properly work.

There are versions of osu! for osx/linux as far as I know. However, i'm not sure how developed/functional they are in comparison to the windows version.
I understand Win8 can be quite a pain to work with, but tbh most software developed is developed for windows, and having such an open world of software is kind of a plus that outweighs most of the minuses for me.
If you paid for a windows operating system, just use it. I use win8 on my PC and i don't really have many issues, and the issues I have had, I've usually been able to deal with.

i didnt really pay for the operating system it came with the computer, and since i use ububtu a lot anyway since most of my family run it and it being able to translate to almost any other operating system gives it the advantage over win, not to mention it is free, the only down side to it is the word processing isnt as "arty" as on Microsoft but i use Google text a lot of the time anyway, the other main reason i want to switch is of course viruses, you just dont get them for lynux/ubuntu!!!! so overall it suites me to switch its just gaming im worried about

A world without bad things is a world without good things.
Yeah, there's no viruses. You know what else there's non of? Non-commercial small time software.
Anyone can code a virus, but at the same time anyone can code a useful program. Even small things like an osu! stream speed tester.

On steam a large amount of games don't have support for osx or linux. Even indie game developers/some large publishers have no interest in developing for linux. Most small useful programs provided on windows don't work either.
My suggestion is to just stay with windows. One day you'll find that you need something and you won't find it on linux. Linux is fairly limited to the software you can actually get.

Nah, you can get close to everything to work on linux, the issue here is generally the performance or stability of running some windows applications through a compatibility layer or a virtual machine. Clearly applications not developed to run on linux wont run natively, the thing here is that there's plenty of software equivalents to what there is for windows. If you switch to linux you should be prepared to swap out the applications you use, but there's plenty of those that do the exact same thing as others do on different platforms.

If you're not sure you're prepared to switch you could just try running it straight from a usb stick, as explained here.

Although as for ubuntu per sé I would probably wait out the next LTS release, which should be the next one released.

you can youse VM Ubuntu becuase most programs works with windows

You might wanna read this thread:

Solution: Running osu! In Ubuntu or Xubuntu

Anyway, if you too lazy to install few things for run osu! on Linux. Why not downgrade to Windows 7 instead?
You should install Wine for run osu! on Linux, and if I'm not wrong running osu! on Linux doesn't work perfectly. But the choice is in your hand.

Pretty much this.

If Steam OS is going to be a hit once it is released (and video drivers actually become good and actually as good as the Windows conterparts) Linux is pretty much going to be another OS devs start their hands on.

If you just want a system that "just werks", and if you only use it casually, especially gaming, stick on Windows.
If you mostly be like me, surf web + music + animu + some code + others once in a while, I'd say pick Linux, it's far more efficient on Windows once you start getting used to the command line and stuff like that IMO. Prepare to Google a lot once you switch though.

Alternatively, why not just keep your Windows setup and run Ubuntu in a virtual machine (using Virtualbox, for instance) than replacing the entire OS with something you will probably switch back to Windows anyway since "I can't make this work!"

ok i probs cant make any windows fanatics understand what is so good about Ubuntu but w'll just leave it at the fact that windows is actually running thing very much like Ubuntu except you cant edit things and play about with the software/partitions and the fragmentation is a devil to get working properly. but anyway my point here is that if any of you guys have run Ubuntu you should know that almost any software that you have to pay for on windows you can get for free on the Ubuntu app store!!! Also having caught a virus that completely destroyed my hard drive on my old laptop before Microsoft spyware or whatever its called even had time to catch it want to b able to browse and game without thee risk of destroying my very expensive laptop!!!! in response to the "world without bad things" post...well to be honest there enough bad in the world for it to do without some idiot destroying my laptop for fun!!!! I also feel the need to point out that (no offence for this) anyone with an interest in coding and designing software will almost certainly run some lynux based system/Ubuntu because it is so much easier to create and run programs on before you convert them to be compatible on a windows or apple system!!
luckily i have checked thoroughly into if it will run effectively on my laptop and it will, HP is among the list of computer Ubuntu/lynux will run on...http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/
ok well basically i have pretty much decided anyway to run a duel boot system since i have enough hard drive/ram ex. to do it. Thanks for all the posts most were useful...ohh and sorry if this post seemed like a rant it really wasnt meant to be but i just read through it and it sounded like that but i really cant find another way to get my points across, thank you +boat , +Oinari-sama and +mekadon youre post were rally helpful. its really appreciated!!
