Let's just say there's this part of a song that repeats but it became a little more intense than before. Do I change the patterns completely?

(Dunno if the first sentence made sense tho)

It depends on what you wanna do. You can change the patterns completely but imo, I think you should make the patterns similar to the less intense one so the flow of rhythm is better.

My general rule of thumb is that variation in the map should match with variation in the song.

And the focus of what I map in each section should focus on what changed in that section, rather than what's prominent.

So, if the music gets "more intense" during a new section, think about why specifically it gets more intense.

Did it introduce a new instrument? Did it increase in pitch? Did the backing drums increase in tempo?

Whatever changed the most should be what you focus on mapping.

Generally speaking there's no such thing as a section in the music repeating, but becoming more intense. If it became more intense, it's because something changed. All you need to do is highlight that change in your choice of what you are mapping.
