I don't know where else this should go, so, here then. I have a gaming forum set up and I was wondering if anyone could help give me some pointers on how to make it more attractive/interesting etc., as well as ways to help my member count grow.

No, this is not advertising...I won't even post the link to my forum unless someone asks. I just need a few tips and stuff. Thanks.

Make something unique and relevant to people's interest that doesn't already exist. Then tell a few friends and let them mention it when someone mentions that interest. Or put it in your sig and whore it on every forum evar. But, that's a dick move.

Hopefully that'll work out. Thanks.

And I tried the dick move before, it fails :P

What forum are you using? (phpBB, ProBoards, etc)

Remmy: I'm using phpBB.

strager: Well, there's the basics...have lots of subject matter, don't go off-topic, don't kill flame wars. Gotcha. What's that about being gay?

Like this?

With extreme prejudice.

Alternate post:

I have a small forum with about 25 or so active members (a little over 300 registered) that has been around for nearly seven years. Not a lot of people stick around but those who do grow to love it. :)

What do you want in a forum? Do you want a small forum where everyone knows your name and they're always glad you came, or do you want a large, booming internet metropolis? The steps to set up either are vastly different.

(Come to think of it, that people actually visited my site in the first place is kind of a fluke, lol.)

Mine is the former version. A small forum like yours, with about 60 registered in 4 months time, and 10 active. But I really want to set up a large one, which I keep failing at. If possible, I would want someone to come look at it to see what I'm doing wrong and how I can improve. That okay?

If it's meant to be, it will grow on its own if given opportunity.

Just leave the possibility there. Don't force growth.
