ive been playing taiko for around four months but i feel like ive been stuck in the same area for the past month or so. i feel like i can play any map up to muzu, then as soon as i try to do any sort of oni i just immediately miss every single pattern. ive practiced them a lot in the tbt training but my brain still just blacks out every time i see one in an actual oni. even when its as easy as <3.5 sr it still feels impossible to do them. honestly just dont know what to do to improve at them and not black out every time theres an oni pattern despite practicing them a lot, any help?

4 months isn't really a lot of play time tbh, especially if its 4 months since you created your account rather than total playtime. The TBT training is really just like a practice drill in a very fixed and controlled scenario but it takes a lot more mental effort to apply the same skill to an actual map. The way I learned to play oni was that I picked a map that I liked a lot, then I just spammed it until I gradually got better and eventually got an FC. At least from my perspective, your progression was already a lot faster than mine and I can tell you that the jump from muzu to oni is one of the hardest. You really just have to practice, just make sure you aren't practicing too much(e.g getting to a point where you want to smash your keyboard or your hands are actually in pain)

note that strain is not the same as pain

I can give further advice if you'd like :)

i mean i have spammed some maps but it doesnt really help with anything in my case, i also dont like playing on ez/ht because i tend to use really bad fingerings and not alt properly

i guess you can try what i did for learning 5 stars and it is to just play for a pass, then gradually you beat your pass with a better one. Then finally at some point you get an fc. you don't need to spam but just try them occasionally during your normal sessions. Most importantly be patient, ive been playing for 6 years now and i still occasionally improve even when i think ive hit my limits.

It's kind of difficult but personally I've been trying to ease into Oni diffs by playing more lowbpm Muzukashii/Oni diffs.
Now I'm a pretty old player and many of the Taiko maps I'm playing too so I can't tell how they compare to modern maps but in general low bpm maps have more complex patterning at lower speed and effectively the patterns that you will encounter at Oni just at higher speed.
So I'm trying to practice pattern recognition on these slow Onis and just gradually raise up the bpm as it gets better and my brain and fingers are able to keep up better.

Some example maps:

beatmapsets/53847#taiko/169006

For me this works well because I'm someone who's naturally fond of lower bpm songs so you might end up cursing the slow (scroll) speed but I found this working more or less.

Another thing I started doing is playing some Muzukashii diffs I already FCd and liked on HD.
Personally I found that when there's a pattern I find hard to read instead of staying on the right side of the scrollbar with my focus it is zooming towards the hitpoint along with the pattern so I stop reading what is coming after which I think is worse than actually failing the pattern and might be one of the main reasons for brain freeze.
In Muzukashiis that isn't really a problem because they have regular breaktimes.
HD forces you to stay on that end so you can't do that stuff at all and also reenforces the pattern recognition because you can't adjust once it's in the dark.

Maybe as a clarifying question, what do you consider an "Oni pattern"?
ddk?
ddkkd?
ddkdkkd?

forgot to respond but like basically anything that isnt ddd/kkk triplets and all doublets

Ooookay, in that case I'd really just recommend to try and get into lower bpm Muzukashii's cause they're going to have some ddk/kkd/dkd/kdk at least and once you are familiar with those, everything else is going to be a lot easier after.

beatmapsets/21472#taiko/74499 some kkd
beatmapsets/100445#taiko/332289 some ddk
beatmapsets/59631#taiko/194913 some ddk, generally quite dense for a Muzu!
https://beatconnect.io/b/59429/DVeqR1Jq/ some consecutive ddk and like 2 harder patterns

Those are all nice to get some success with those patterns because there are only a few of those patterns which means that you can likely FC the map if you nail them.

At the end of the day though, the map I arguably grinded by far the most to learn 3 note patterns alongside Fallen Angel that I already posted last time:
beatmapsets/17682#taiko/72785
It's very dense with those patterns but also very slow at 110 bpm meaning that it is easy to get back into the map and focus on each triplet individually. I think at the start I regularly had like 80% C ranks on it but eventually it got better.

don't , its better for your health
kantan - muzu = good, no doubt

oni = torturing yourself

start with HT mod to practice the patterns first. and most importantly, don't play maps over 200 bpm or else your hands will rot and detach themselves
