So, I've been trying to change my username to something else and a while ago it said the name would be available in a few days. Now that I'm checking it, it's saying it will be available after 162 days. Searching the username I found an account made in February this year with 0 playtime in all modes; the person literally just opens osu! once in a literal month (or even less) just so they can prevent anyone else from getting that username.

Sure this isn't the biggest need in the world, but it's something incredibly easy to fix and now that I've mentioned this (assuming no one else ever mentioned a similar issue) I hope it can be fixed. Not sure how it will be done - maybe changing their username to something like a string of digits the way it is in the profile URL, or by perhaps deleting such accounts; I don't know. It's a very easy fix to an issue that shouldn't have ever existed to begin with, if this method of being able to permanently keep a username without ever touching the game gets more known, it's gonna get pretty bad where ever active player is gonna have a 2005 looking username because someone will eventually do this to every decent username...

If they are logging into the account, then they are using it. Therefore, the name is in use.

This will not happen because multiaccounting is in strict violation of the rules.

Also my very point is that just them logging into their account every 2 months lets the name be in use. That is exactly the issue here. That's an exploit, you could just log into your account every month and be able to keep your name without ever having clicked on a single map ever. Literally the issue...

Also, do you think multiaccounting is easy to get caught? Because, it's not. I myself have known cases of multiaccounting gone undetected. Clearly it has to be taken care of manually. And if this 'bug' (I'm treating this as a bug since it doesn't make sense especially when other inactive accounts are taken care of) gets more known thousands could do that. What then? Not possible to deal with that. Best find a fix quick, and this is a very tiny issue, would take no time to think of something.

If someone is logging into their account, then they are actively using it - fair and sqare. It doesn't matter what they use it for. They could be logging in just to download maps and then play offline. They could be talking to friends. It's not up to you to decide what is or is not an "exploit".

Huh? That's literally an exploit...what?

Nope, thats not really an exploit. There is more to this game than just clicking circles, as long as they log in they are probably using their account in one form or another and its not really up to us to judge if that counts or not

Well maybe because the game has a small playerbase right now, if it ever blows up and a lot of people start playing, almost definitely someone will eventually spread the fact that you can just get your alt email accounts - make multiple accounts (which is very easy, and using a vpn would make it undetectable too) all with reasonable and normal names, leading to no decent usernames being available.

Small playerbase? there is an active 20k players on any time period? You are assuming the worst of the community. As said above, multiaccounting is in clear violation of the community rules and if it is suspected of being abused then the rules and subsequent consequences will be taken advantage of.

"Decent" usernames is completely subjective. Someone with the username of 202019284 may never want the username 'imtoxicated' and vice versa. Multi-accounting to secure a name is a very useless reason of multiaccounting because if you have any progress on either accounts and you forget to put your VPN up for one time then it can be traced back to the same IP as both accounts and POSSIBLY both accounts can get restricted since it is a clear violation of the rules, or even worse things can happen.

People logging in for a day or so may be waiting or wanting to get back into the community/game without having the actual time to and just because they aren't playing doesn't mean they aren't chatting in forums/the chat system, etc.

162 days is a short time to wait for a name that, without this username system in place at all would mean the inability to change your name in the first place - creating the issue that you stated above; however, because we are allowed to change our usernames just wait patiently. If they decide to never give the name up then you seem to just be out of luck. Try and find a new name OR you can do what most people do that are waiting for a username and they add a "-" or a simple number to the beginning or end of the username.

Marking as invalid.

You are taking this name changing thing to much for granted. Historically players couldn't change their name to begin with. For the better part of osu!'s history names were synonymous with the account's identity. These days it's less so, but even now names is one of the primary things what enables an account to be recognizable by the community. Having another player loose their name too soon via involuntary means would be really bad.

Players can hold on to their names so long as they keep logging in and using their account in some way, and this is not only an issue but a good thing. If you want a name someone has you will have to wait until they have finished with their presence in the community.
