I would try to narrow things down to make the feature request sensible.
You may have noticed some o!m maps have their own customized hitsound (like piano or drum or bass or something else). In current preview system, it is impossible to make a sensible preview music containing them. (In other words, preview sounds differently from what you can hear at play time.)What you may have heard in the preview is a plain music with nearly every beat removed from original song (because these beats are now in the song itself, with hitsounds!). In insane maps nearly no beats are left in the background music, making preview completely nonsense.
There are mainly 2 solution to this problem:
(1) Allowing a customized preview (like preview.mp3). In this case mappers are allowed to do so, when the preview is replaced by another piece of mp3 instead of original background music, BAT would take care of this special situation to disallow abuse of this feature (Putting an un-related mp3 as preview). (Games like DJMAX use this practice)
(2) Allowing real-time hitsound playing preview. In this case when users have their SE open and mappers click a special button in the editor shows something like "play hitsound on preview", the osu! game would load in both BGM and hitsound and synthesize them to make a sensible preview. (Just like osu!topus playing the song in background) (Games like LR2 use this practice)
With this feature added, we would have awesome (and suitable ) preview on many (well-made) o!m maps.
What do you think?
