A gif is a series of images, so you need some form of animation software if you want to make your own gif. If you want to take it from a source, you can take it from a known video, you can break the video down into images and combine them into gifs (Shameless advertisement for a guide I wrote on how to make gifs from anime: http://mixmatched.wordpress.com/2011/02 ... m-a-movie/)
