I would like to suggest actually recording scores for coop
they would be kept separate from single player and would list the names of each player involved

just because it is recording the score, doesn't mean it would necessarily have to impact rank, though being ranked as a team with people you frequently play with might be cool

pros:
more incentive to play coop
would be especially great if http://osu.ppy.sh/forum/t/88375 gets implemented

cons:
would have to store the scores and possibly replays

Well I see 2 ways to go about this:

#1: Record coop high scores and teammate.
#2: Record coop high scores only.

Scores in #1 should be recorded in a way similar to SC2 team league, eg:

Team PlayerA-PlayerB, Map Name, High Scores
Team PlayerA-PlayerB-PlayerC, Map Name, High Scores

ie difference player combinations gives different teams. This can then be tracked in a global leaderboard divided by categories:
-Tag2 Division
-Tag3 Division
etc

The draw back with #1 is that it'll require substaintially more tracking and DB manipulation than #2, since #2 only requires a single global leaderboard.
