What is PP Farming? Is it good or Bad?

Hi, I just started playing osu 3 days ago and someone said that Farming is bad if a player wants to improve and I have a few questions.

•What exactly is Farming?
•Is it good or bad?
•How would you know if you're Farming?
•Am I Farming right now?
•How to stop/avoid Farming?

I saw a YT Video saying that Farming is the common trend (?) among new OSU players and I'm scared that someone will look at my profile and say that I'm a farmer.

If someone can kindly answer my questions, I would be forever grateful. Thank you in advance.❤️

Also.. how to know if a map is a Farming map?

the easiest one is playing 30 sec maps ( Haitai, Harumachi, aozora, refrain, cbcc, bob builder, etc ) or looks at my profile for Ez Pp FaRms XD

Other questions you mention:

You don't need to be scared when other people call you farmer, I mean as long as you're having fun getting PP than it really is doesn't matter at all right?.

pp farming is such a normal thing nowadays, so it doesnt matter if you farm or not. just play every maps so you get to know every kind of maps and dont just stick to the one you like.

you should enjoy game, if your way of enjoying game is gaining ranks by farming then more power too you.

The trend that generally reflects a farm map is one which is short and speedy, i.e. intensity maps. A map that is long and technical is sort of the opposite, i.e. consistency maps. Then there's the other 2 combinations, short and slow are commonly called easy maps, long and fast are then commonly regarded as hard. Of course what is considered long/short or fast/slow is dependent on the player. This is plainly my understanding, not positioning it as a fact.

From what I can tell an acknowledged proficient player excels in at least one and is no slouch in the others. If you want to be regarded as a pro you probably want to invest 80% of your time into a niche and 20% of your time making sure you're not too frail in other aspects of the game. The problem of farming is that it overcommits you to a very specific type of map and skews your skill distribution.

The part about overweight pp that will probably be improved ,albeit slowly and through many iterations, in the future. Though being very skilled in one category usually does spill over to others, which is why many great players are highly ranked and with many well known exceptions as well.

Quite a fair share of conversation turn sour over these distinctions for tribalistic reasons, somehow being an elitists makes one feel as accomplished as an elite without drudging through the grind behind the scenes, it's sorta like a dopamine shortcut if I may. Been there done that, not a saint, don't recommend you to venture down that rabbit hole though.

Long story short: don't overcommit, stick to your purpose, note the exceptions, don't get sucked it. Hope this helps :)

Yep, common farm mappers are sotarks, fieryrage, logoffnow, browiec, nasya, and armin. There are 100% others that I can't think of off the top of my head but these are some good examples of mappers who generally map farm. But this doesn't mean they're bad mappers. In fact, they all have really good non-farm maps, its just the majority of their maps are farm

Yeah most have really good non farm it’s just they are 95% known for their farm maps

farming is basically a fake form of skill since osu! ranks are based on PP. if you're looking to improve, play songs you enjoy as I see you are new to the game. Brush up your skill not your ego. here are some pp mappers you should most definitely avoid:

Sotarks
Fieryrage
Monstrata
Log Off Now (Although I visit his songs every now and then because I am a mimi simp)
Generally songs that have "(tv size)" since those are all 1:30 and don't practice skill much but are short pp maps much.
The 4 mappers aren't bad or anything, but they're notorious in the osu! community for being farm mappers and are generally disliked by the general playerbase (although sometimes i they have guilty pleasure from time to time LOL)
ANY MAP BELOW 1 MINUTES IF A GUARANTEED FARM MAP. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THEM.

Not really. There's a lot of people who farms a lot at first and then improves other kind of skills later on. also thats why new players tend to improve faster than old player like me .-.
