At what point can one say that you are good at 4k?
I need to know so I can brag about it to my friends if I reach that point xD
animeslayergp
in my opinion, when you can get good 1m scores or play 5 star, but your freinds would be impressed if they saw you playing mid to high 4star
gloomygl1
You can literally show a mid 2* to your friends and they'll be impressed.
DeltaNami
My friends were impressed with me when I shitmissed my way through deconstruction star, so it doesn't take long. Tbh, the further up the skill ladder you go, the more things just look the same to an untrained eye, so 4-5 stars would be considered good in relation to bragging.

You can start to brag when you can play maybe 3 stars I guess cause a normal person who has never seen the game would be like, "Wow! How can you read that?" This is from personal experiences.

Bragging to someone who doesn't play starter pack
  1. Streams/dump,
  2. Relatively high scroll speed,
  3. EDM or any song that has a hard drop,
  4. Hidden (hit or miss, tbh.),
  5. SV/storyboard.
Tbh, I'd say around ~5*, but SR isn't reliable either, so. Just find some popular stream files.

just play long jumpstream maps lol. anyone who does not have a grasp of rhythm games will be impressed to it.

the bar for impressing friends that dont play the game as much is really really low, as etienne explains in his video about how people percieve difficulty in rhythm games:

in short, dense patterns are more impressive looking over technical patterns, higher keys per second is more impressive looking. i also reckon that easy ln maps where the notes are all just really short holds instead of inverse would impress them too

this generally isnt as impressive to people who actually play the game though

Thanks for the replies! I guess I am kinda at that point then.

But what about in the perspective of players who know the game?
When would you say that someone has reached a level that is considered "good"?
DeltaNami
Obviously my opinion, but I would say passing 4* consistently is decent and passing 5* consistently is good. These both mainly apply to the higher difficulties of each level (i.e. passing regret is not hard, but passing planet shaper is hard even though both are 5*).

If you want my actual impressions on good players, it's when you can see them developing their skillsets. Like when you can see someone is getting good HS scores and someone is getting good CJ scores. That to me indicates that they actually care about what they're doing and are trying to improve - which is a "good" player imo.

in that perspective it's definitely 100% subjective, though some favorable traits that people find in "good" players include less mashing. getting between 1:1 and 2:1 great to miss ratios fall under this. of course, you can manip and still have respectable skills (like jkzu or sillyfangirl) but personally i believe having good accuracy as well as high MA in harder, more technical files is very respectable.

being good in tech is also something i personally find respectable, especially in tech acc, because most people are quite lacking in the suite.

once again, this is all subjective. some people might have more respect toward people with extremely low misscounts but low accuracy to be very respectable.

of course, there's no point in which a player can be considered "good" at the game by everyone, though as i said, being well rounded in all skillsets, including ones which are not very common, makes you a much stronger and much more respectable player. i have more respect for 5th danners who are equally good at everything than people who are tachyon for only one skillset and are absolute dogshit on every other skillset

I think it really depends on the view you have on the game. Some players might find high accuracy but low tech skills desirable while player might find low accuracy and high tech skills desirable. I personally think that high accuracy and high tech skills are mutually important to develop and have.

Perception of "good" can also be different from person to person. Someone who's just started playing rhythm games can find someone who plays 2* to 3* a really good player. A player who might be more seasoned that plays 4* to 5* might find someone who plays 7* to 8* a very skilled player. So, it really depends on your friends' perspective and understanding of the game.

in my experience, good is entirely subjective. as tempting as it is to compare yourself to other people- everyone has their own unique skillsets and everyone progresses differently. A person's rate of improvement will heavily impact what they consider to be "good", and as such anyone can be "good" depending on who you ask. I've seen total beginners who consider themselves good and I've seen near-top-level players that consider themselves bad.

Just enjoy the game and don't worry about whether youre "good" or not- I think you'll have a better experience overall.

being able to play with hidden or flashlight (it's hard) but it's easy once you get the hang of it.
keremaru
people have told me "wow you're so good" when i was just trying to play 3.5* maps
so around there is what a person who doesn't play rhythm games thinks is good

but personally, just being well-rounded is where you start to be good
even if you don't have much time practicing that skillset, any progress is progress

Wholeheartedly agree.

This is just wrong. Hidden is easier for some people. Flashlight is impressive, but it's really not hard to do if you have the right hitposition and reading ability. It's really based on reading flashlight, which is not a fundamental skill.

I did a mania performance during graduation dinner.
After starting with an easy SV map, I played Tempestissimo on 4.62 star difficulty with storyboard on with 25% background dim while holding my keyboard like a guitar and putting it on my head during the easy parts. (ended up with about 97% acc) Damn that shit was one of the best moments of my life. Surprisingly, the girls screamed louder than the boys lmfao. Oh, and the coolest part of the show for me was the stage lights that were flashing so I felt like a DJ at that time!

PM Me if you want a video of it (it's quite short and the quality might be crappy)
I still haven't claimed the video (the best footage recorded) from one of the cameraman
haha i rolypoly
for me it's kinda weird. I say you are good once you reach 5 digit. Because that officially means you're better then 50% of all people that have played this game. (its probably higher then just 50% but eh.)
