why?

E-sport is just a term for games that are played at a highly (sometimes) competitive level that try to gain revenue from streams

It won't happen, because who wants to watch people play against each other playing kawaii Japanese songs? E-sports is just barely even profitable at this time, as it's so new. There's so much work involved, getting players, sponsors, teams, etc...

Not to mention it's such a buzzword for little kids who think they can become a professional gamer because they play LoL for hours when they get back from school

By all means, if you wish to fund an osu! tournament, then be my guest.

The reasons Osu won't become an Esport is because of it's skill cap and how this game plays.
It would be boring to watch a game of who is the first to break his/her combo.

We've had our share of osu! tournaments, I think that's as far as it goes.

You don't "decide" for something to become competitive, it evolves on its own based on the game's mechanics.

Given that osu! has no actual competitive elements (apart from TAG play, there's no interaction between players) it would make for a very poor competitive game, as far as audience entertainment goes

like watching golf on TV (even though some people are into that)

It is highly unlikely, if not impossible, that osu will become an e-sport. There are a few reasons for this.

1. osu! lacks player interaction. In any good E-Sport, outcomes are affected by how well teammates, opponents, or some mix of both perform. This, in turn, is what makes E-Sports exciting. Audiences like to watch players strategize and outplay their opponents, which is a huge part of the spectator appeal. osu! will never have this same competitive aspect because it's really just a single player game with a comparison of scores. Basically your outcome is influenced by only your own performance.

2. osu! lacks universal audience appeal. Games that turn into E-Sports usually appeal to very wide audiences, and it is very easy to just start watching and understanding gameplay. For instance, everyone who's ever played an FPS game has heard of Counter Strike, and the same goes for Starcraft and RTS and LoL and MOBA. Basically these games are similar enough to their representative genre that anyone can just start watching and understanding basic gameplay elements, even if, for instance one has never played a MOBA and started watching a LoL tournament. osu! is such a niche game, with lots of niche gameplay elements and songs that don't appeal to a wide audience.

3. osu! is just plain boring to watch. There is little to no visual appeal to spectators, as gameplay isn't diverse or flashy. Compare clicking circles and sliders to the strategic skirmishes in Starcraft or the crazy teamfights in DotA. The entertainment value in spectating is just so much higher in the latter. Also, when you have eight split screens on stream, even commentators have a difficult time keeping up with performance of all eight players. Compare this to LoL where the spectator interface allows one to get a pretty good idea of each player's performance without the need of confusing split screens.

4. Money. Every game that turned into an E-Sport has been helped along by a multi-million-dollar company in order to establish tournaments and prize pools. More money = more players (and sponsors) = more competition = more viewers = more money. The cycle repeats. Not the case for osu at all. You also have to consider the barriers of entry into E-Sports, which are quite high as only a few games are really hugely successful anyways.

I think there is nothing more to say.

Not your fault though.

You're being forced to commentate a game which isn't meant to be commentated.

The very concept of "osu! commentary" amuses me

"Cue Zero One One Zero Eight Seven Eight Three Five Zero Two snaps the hitcircle jump and eases into the bell slider! How will Ecks Ecks DeathSlayer Shinigami Ecks Ecks respond? Will he keep clicking notes? OH MY GOD HE DOES! Brilliant strategy by Ecks Ecks DeathSlayer Shinigami Ecks Ecks! This is why he's here, Justin. This guy is a PRO."

You wouldn't believe how fun announcing the next map being Macuilxochitl to the watchers is

Max combo: 800
Drain time: 100s

8 hits per second

1 hit every 125 milliseconds on average

I'm trying to spell overmapped but I can't spell at all so I need to go back to school instead of bitch about this

it's more like

pregame: funny conversation

game starts
silence
"oh player A missed"
silence
"player B missed"
silence
"player C still is going str- nevermind he missed"
silence
"player D still SSes.... he missed"

so commentary only exists for jynxing purposes. which is kinda cool.

Hm .. . . .

I'm very good at jynxing players indeed. The best is when they've done well throughout the whole match and then just throw it hard
awp
whoa, I just realized: while pointing out why osu! would make a terrible esport I don't think anyone mentioned that there isn't any strategy whatsoever

unless my retarded commentary post counts

There is actually strategy now that you have modded picks and a roster of 8 players since 4 play

you can switch one player and rearrange your team to get the highest score

Oh, cool. Even if once the match actually starts there's no strategy, the setup phase DOES have strategy to it; that's neat

not if you are germany. we chose our players based on how good they are at button mashing. the multiplayerround they play consists of cookiezi-level DT insanes, unranked trololol-maps and generally no maps that would ever be featured in the actual competition.

we just have luck that our best buttonmashers happen to be good at modplay too.

Ruthless German efficiency. I don't know why but the idea of Lothar Matthäus playing osu! amuses me.
