Just thought the same thing as I dont like most high placed maps too much :3
But yeah, votes are votes ~
Gratz to mappers whose maps made it in :3

This list is really just a popularity contest, since everyone has an equally weighted vote regardless of if you've only played 2 maps last year or every single one, someone should try reranking these by taking the # of votes divided by the number of plays each mapset has, that may produce a slightly more accurate "best of" list.

I mean, it's no suprise Gangnam Style won, it was the most played map by a landslide this year.

Oh, good thing I mapped some popular animu tv-saizu.
Now I got two maps in the top 100. \o/

Wow guys, please take your negative attitudes away from this thread. This is not a competition. It is a study of what osu! players as an overall group enjoyed the most. Every person has their own method of enjoyment. This is the best – not favourite – of osu! in 2012. Let this be a reminder that not every player out there plays osu! for no-background-no-skin-320x240-tablet-SS-or-nothing-super-serious-600bpm-stream-maps-all-day-every-day. A lot of people play for enjoyment and casually play songs for enjoyment, and get this enjoyment from the songs they voted for. If you cannot accept this, then just turn a blind eye to these threads rather than complaining about the process or results.

I will lock the thread soon if there's no further constructive conversation happening ;).

I'm no-background-no-skin-1366x768-tablet-SS but... ;_;

Although i disagree, this is pretty much a favourite list. And yes, i've stoped checking these threads after 2010.

It's that time of year again, where we round up the beatmaps crafted over the last 12 months and turn to you guys to find out which were the most loved maps! It's been a busy year, with 1,446 maps ranked in total, so make sure to think carefully before choosing up to ten of your favourite creations. Remember to vote based on the mapping, not the song itself!

Just saying.

Anyways, best does not mean most enjoyable IMO. I voted for a song that I didn't even play that much simply because it was high quality. Most of my selection was songs that I personally enjoyed even if they were not the most technical. I'm surprised He's a Pirate made it on the list at all. I was wholly surprised to see so many people agree with me on that.

What was an even bigger surprised is that Rainbow dash likes girls made the list. If we're talking about best maps, and most enjoyable maps, that song has nothing but hate for it in the comments, and it's so awkward to play. I don't understand why people find those kind of maps enjoyable. If someone who voted for it, would post, and give me a reason why they voted for it, I am very curious to know the mindset behind voting for such a stress-inducing map, that is just spamming overly difficult patterns in areas.

But yeah, bitter feelings as usual (for every kind of chart anyway) because none of my maps have made it in, gg will try harder next time

There should be a rule to ban the vote map unless you have 5.000 playcount or 1 map ranked.

It's stupid I know, but I'm pretty sure of most people who voted here are newbies at all.
Shiro
They're still part of the community. No reason to leave their votes out. Unless someone makes 40 accounts to vote 40 times for the same maps.

Just compare Best of 2011 with Best of 2012. I am not surprised about Gangnam Style but many other maps on the list.

I think it has something to do with the link from the osu! main menu to the voting. The attention of many new players was called this way. Players who didn't really play enough maps to get decent experience for judging map quality.
Gabi
It's hilarious to see how many butthurt people there are in this thread. Who are any of you to say that gangnam style shouldn't be on the top of the list? osu! has nearly 1.8mil users, there's tons of casual players that probably loves that map and voted for it, and sure the fact that it is a popular song helps it, but so what? Just because it isn't your favorite map doesn't mean it shouldn't be on that list, get over yourselves.

I was hoping to see here this map http://osu.ppy.sh/s/42669 .
Highly disapointed.

Of course Gangnam Style won.

No shocker there.

I'm really suprised none of ztrot's maps ranked higher.

I feel as though a certain map should'nt have even been in the count, despite the fact that it was ranked in 2012. Kind of obvious as to why it got that raink.

Well, regardless of what map ranked highest, I am proud of all the creators that made the top 100, and to those that didn't, the best of luck to you this year.
Sakisan
I don't see the problem of casual players voting, quite the opposite really. It's just that we can see distinct trends in the elected maps (those that LKs explained) and that those trends really don't fit with those that did not vote for them.

In my own personal opinion, I feel like we've got for a big part the list of "maps that can only be played by the best" instead of a list of the "best maps".
endlessHorizon
i think it wasn't a very smart move to include approved maps. They're the reason this list isn't as great as last years.
On the other hand I know the mappers put so much of their time and heart in these maps, that they actually deserve to be voteable. This is a real dilemma!
CXu
What I don't get is how The Big Black got so high. Most "pro players" probably don't like the map all that much (this is based on nothing btw, so do prove me wrong), and I'm not sure, but to a lot of people actually enjoy the song at all?

Then The Big Black must've been voted by not-so-pro-players that didn't vote it for the song but for the map, so basically it does fit the criteria of voting based on map and not song, but I do feel it got so high is mostly due to the sheer difficulty of the map, and not because they enjoy the map itself (I mean, how many people that voted on it can actually pass the map, lol)

Ahhh well, whatever.

what.

Also, I can't pass Dragons and I voted for it
Why? I find it enjoyable even if I can't SS HD HR. It is fun even playing with nofail on.
Same for The Big Black.
Hur durr WHO CARES if we can't pass? I voted for the taiko diff and because I really enjoy ~trying~ to play this map with relax or even halftime.
No one needs to pass the map to actually enjoy it and YES, IMO it deserves to be one of the "Best of 2012" because it is something new that changed our view of "Insane maps", just like Freedom Dive.
Didn't vote for Freedom Dive but I would.
The map is very well structured, the only problem is the BPM
Another diff is pretty enjoyable btw.
Meh.

I feel like I'm one of the few who actually likes this list, except Dragons deserved higher though, imo.

it sadden's me a bit that that maps i wanted so badly to be in that list are missing. but oh well ;w;
gratz too all the mappers who got maps in the top 100
Low
the top 20 contains a lot of maps that are basically only voted for so much because they're super hard (ie val maps, the big black, freedom dive, kokou no sousei, etc) and people like that for some reason
Black Wolf159
I disagree all maps are good and style is especially Gangnam First = w =

i knew the big black complaints would appear soon, lol

just shut up and enjoy the list, if you can't, then simply ignore hat it existed.

Reposting that. Also wouldn't it be more interesting to have the full results ? I suppose everyone wonders how many votes their maps got.
I'll repost this too. Some of my votes were for maps that aren't in this list but seemed to be really well-received, and it would be interesting to see how they fared.

It's kind of cool seeing "unexpected"/"disappointing" things get places... it shows us a bit about the opinions of the people who aren't so active in the community. Not that anyone didn't expect all the approved hardmaps to rank high. :P

You realize that the majority of the most voted maps are the exact opposite of what you said here (i can only recognise the big black, freedom dive and val0108 maps, but i'm sure there's more), right? Because, by this statement, it seems you don't.

I also believe this (as well as every public-voting-based chart) should be named "Most popular of 20xx" because that's basically what happens. Not saying it's a bad thing, but a wrong name is misleading for the users.

peppy wrote:

This statement also backs the "Most popular" factor, as what the majority likes is undoubtly the most popular, which is not necessarily the best (as it is usually a subjective thing).

He made it so that players can now make the BG solid black via ingame methods, along with ditching the custom combo colors, skins, SBs, etc. So he probably does understand that that audience is there.

However, what he said is still likely correct. Those super hardcore players are still a (very sizable) minority. When there can be over 8K players on at once and only several thousand players overall (at best) can reliably FC at least 90% of Insanes, well... that says a lot.

Not that I mind the song Gangnam Style, but in my opinion there are definately better maps out there than that.

We don't really have "approved" category in 2013, so no need to do something against app maps. But as someone mentioned before:

Could we limit the vote to "you must have passed that map once"(even with no fail) or whatever? Sorry to take Big Black as example, people don't vote for the song for sure, they vote for the map ---- to be extremely hard. I don't think that's what we wants to see.

With all do respect, FD is a very good map, but I'm surprised it got the amount of votes it did considering most people simply *can't play it*. Why vote for a map you can't play...

"Map n was only voted so high because of m."

You can continue to use this as an excuse for it beating the maps you thought deserved higher, or you can take this on board in a constructive way, and understand that this is what people want. It doesn't matter if it is what you want or not, but people are clicking that vote button because they either saw (keep in mind a lot of people spectate a fair amount) or played the map and enjoyed what they saw. There is a huge range of players and skill levels on osu!, and the only thing these results says to me is that we need to cater to all of them. It also allows us to ask questions like: How high would big black have been if it had more difficulties?

It's great to do this once a year and see how things have changed. I see no reason to separate certain categories of maps or people. If you would like to do that, please run your own private voting booths (google forms actually makes this pretty easy these days!).

With that, I will be locking this thread from any further discussion. Thanks to everyone who participated in voting!
