The type of stream where the spacing increases over a length of time?
Do I have to manually select each object and scale it accordingly or...?

manual. sorry.
tips: set up the direction of the stream with a slider, then let the circles you place follow the body but also increase distance or decrease distance as you desire. just remove the slider after.

Maybe manual with using distance snap and shape it yourself would work i think
