[evenK] vs [oddK] Keymapping Question

I've been playing 4k for nearly a month and have the point where I want to try to play 5k/7k. My problem is that once the space bar is introduced I have a hard time adapting.
How do y'all have your keys mapped when you play odd-key maps? Is there a strategy I don't know, or is it just a grind?

it's the same as starting to play 4k, takes some time to get used to it, just take it easy and start with easier stuff till you get the hang of it, no rush

I think the default bindings are good for 7k, 5k is actually harder for the thumb tho since there's less fields the middle one is used more than in 7k so you can start with only 7k just fine

also in the long run it's better if you learn to use your thumb, it's definetely a lot more flexible than your pinkies h

It is definitely a bit harder to get used to, but it just takes some time and practice. Try not to compare your progress in other keys to your progress in 4k.

There are alternative keybinds people use, such as sdf hjkl (and other variations), but those can put you at a disadvantage on certain kinds of patterns. It breaks symmetry between your hands, so symmetrical patterns end up using different fingers. It also means you're using your pinkie for a key, and pinkies have less strength and range of motion then the rest of your fingers.

Overall, I'd say it's best to try to use the default style (you can certainly move the keys to different rows, or spread them out and such), but it's not impossible to play with an alternative layout if you really decide that's what you want to do.

4k and other keymodes are totally different games. Expect nearly nothing to transfer. Because 4k has only 4 possible notes, the number of patterns is ridiculously low. Start with low SR songs, lower scroll speed, and likely a new skin.

I used [a][s][4][5][6] split for 5k for the longest time, but I find its less enjoyable despite making it easier. A lot of songs are based around thumbplay, and I feel like I sort of did a disservice to the mapper.
