Am I a farmer?

Hello, recently I downloaded a lot of new beat-maps, and played them. I noticed while playing my rank shot up (50,000 to 40,000 in 5ish maps) and it got me wondering, am I farming? I'm trying to enjoy the game as long as I can before going to scores, but just watching my score shoot up made me feel like I was cheating or something. So I just want you honest opinion on this. Thanks! (PS, if this helps, I'm rank #41,000 capable of doing 4*'s with A's and S's.)

Thanks again,
Andre

You certaiinly don't seem to be farming. If you have the skill to pass 4 star maps then you should have been a lot higher in the rankings than 41,000. Your sudden rise in the rankings can be explained by you playing a few ranked maps while having relatively few ranked plays( I can't believe you made it this far with only around 50 of them). So, to reiterate, you have nothing to worry about.

A good portion of your top plays are farm charts, yes. But its not really your fault, its just a byproduct of the 4-key ranked category in that difficulty range. I'd say you're doing fine.

did you migrate to osu from another vsrg? when i first migrated to osu from another vsrg, my rank shot up from 7 digit to almost 40k in about a week. even if you didnt, having your rank grow quickly doesnt make you a farmer. if anything, it's an indication that you're improving quickly.

If you haven't touched triumph and regret yet then you should be fine. Farming in osu!mania isn't really like in osu!std where any tv size jump map will do, there are like an exclusive 5 maps which give a ridiculous amount of PP. A farmer would be someone like me, who plays extremely inflated 6*s for an adrenaline rush.

yeah, i came directly from sound voltex, i was able to do some 16-17's, and i guess the skill just came from there (which explains why i jumped directly to 4 stars)

Here's something to consider too:

Farming only gets people as far as their skill allows. Once you've got a score that you can't easily beat on every ranked difficulty high enough to potentially be worth PP, you end up in a position where you either need a new score on a new farm map, or you need to improve your scores on existing maps.

Since your account PP is not just adding up every score, you can't just keep setting scores worth the same amount of PP and expect to get the full value of that score. If you set 5 scores in a row worth the exact same amount of PP, each new score will add less PP to your account. This is specifically meant so that you can't spam 10000 plays on easy maps and be able to match or beat someone who has say 500 plays on much harder maps.

So basically, farming will only get you so far, and PP actually works best if everyone attempts to farm. Once you're capped out by your skill level and unable to add any more PP, your PP is as close to a representation of your skill as it will ever get. The less you've farmed, the less accurate PP is as a proxy for skill level.

then that explain why your rank is shooting up so fast.

Woah, this is the coolest explanation I've seen. Logically, it makes sense to me. However it seems in practice not so much, as the system favors high density maps. I can practice LN + minijacks all day but my triumph and regret score isn't going anywhere. For that I would need acc and better mashing.

it doesnt really account for the fact that osu!mania 4key star ratings are a far cry from an accurate representation of the skill curve in 4key.

think im wrong? Empress SC.

If you do not intend to farm then in my opinion you are not farming.

Yes Lights, star rating is broke. Empress sc is a good example of how silly it can be.

I never meant to imply pp was actually a good proxy for skill, just that technically due to how account pp is calculated, it gets closer and closer to being a reasonable proxy for skill as you have more and more scores.

But due to the biases in star rating, pp is biased as well, meaning 2 players of equal skill can have very different pp depending on what sort of patterns they are best at.
