Just wondering if I will be sued for illegal music downloads from this game.

I have heard last night that in canada they are cracking down on illegal downloads. mainly music and movie downloads.
This could be a min- of 5000$ fine per download

if anyone knows of any info on this please let me know.

The only thing I see in the TOS of osu that they are not responsible for what users upload.

Odds are you won't be, it's just typical government fear mongering. Of course, you are legally liable if you're uploading or downloading songs you don't have the rights to.

If you're one of the extremely unlucky 0.0001% that gets targeted, you'll probably be sent a letter by your ISP telling you to stop, without any action action being taken.

I think you're only liable if you upload, actually. At least, round these parts. Either way, I'm really not concerned in the slightest, and you probably shouldn't be either.

Especially if it's strictly music and videos, because osz files are technically neither

besides, they can only prosecute for certain record companies, anyway. If something is independently produced, or is foreign and not distributed in Canada (which is like 75% of osu! music because lol anime) I don't think they could or would do shit about it because they have nothing to gain.

Only the people who own the rights to that music can go after you, I think

Not here:

"And the artist involved, Chisu, has spoken out against the action, apologizing to her 9-year old fans and directing them to free streaming content from her albums on Spotify."

Yeah, dw.

yeah but we're in Canada, not some dystopian cyberapocalyptic future wasteland you guys call Finland

Worst case scenario you could play osu! as usual, and just download the songs using the osu! website, beatmap packs and a proxy or something. osu! the program doesn't care whether you downloaded a song legally or not.

I doubt osu! interests copyright holders to a degree that they would actually go and track what you download from this site. If it did, we'd see a lot more licensed songs getting DMCA takedowns (has this ever even happened?).

What that Canadian "crackdown" thing is about is mainly bittorrent traffic, as its easy to separate from other web traffic and monitor.

Yeah, this was basically what happened to me. My service provider found out that I was torrenting an eminem discography, and my internet got cut for five minutes. When It was back up, I had to wipe it off my HDD to get my internet reconnected.

moral of the story: don't use a public site & well-known like thepiratebay to download music from popular artists. You should be fine if it's osu though, since it's not really a mainstream game.

i actually got few letters from my internet provider telling me to stop torrenting

then i downloaded peerblock and i stopped receiving letters

What.

Is this really a thing now? I've been torrenting for years and years and nothing like this has ever happened

Thanks for the Reply's all..

I guess i should have looked into it.. I all that the only thing saving us it that mainly ISP's don't have to give out info. Companies have tried many of times to have a law that ISP's have to give out this info.. but have lost every case even in the highest of courts and couldn't be able to go to court for many years..
but that was years ago i heard that.

So when i heard this on the news I got a little worried and made a post.

Some people really should worry depending on the ISP you have, because they are giving out this info and people are actually being sued for hundreds of 1000's of dollars. I am lucky to have the ISP I have.. I used to work for them as a tech support and I know how hard it is even for police to get info on what people do on the internet.. they would have to mail in copes of reports to get anything on them.

but anyway this is starting to get a little long here lol. again thanks all I do feel better about this. If i ever hear anything about download songs from this site I will make a post to save others.. but that is not all that likely lolol

that's kind of pointless. Since, you know, you could burn it onto CDs, or a flash drive, or something. They're not even trying.

I have and will continue to process DMCA takedowns. You are responsible for what you upload (and download, if you are in a region where that kind of thing applies).
