getting to map the song exactly as I feel it is the reason I'm mapping the song in the first place so top diff is the only possible place to start for me

I map the "idk" difficulty first. Map first, then say which difficulty it is after. Usually top dif as well.

Usually Insane or Extra, since they're great choices to develop rhythm choice before simplify or overmap anything, then go from them.
