According to some of my friends, osu! is a dead game. I personally think otherwise.
ppl that think this game is dead, speak up,
ppl that think this game is alive, speak up.

for comparison, 2-3 years ago i've mostly seen ~15-17k. right now it's at 16k so i'd say it's around the same as it has been the last few years. still i'd be happy to see it growing instead of stagnating but since we still have lazer in the making i think things are looking pretty good :3

It seems that CTB is dead since 2017.
You can see a huge difference in plays between 2013 and 2017+ maps.

But in general, it has been getting popular in the early 2010s but it has been getting stuck since 2016.
Let me put the peak players of various february dates, with the magic of Wayback Machine:

10 FEB 2012: 6260
27 FEB 2013: 7822 - Slight increase.
27 FEB 2014: 12342 - Considerable increase
28 FEB 2015: 12861 - Stuck.
29 FEB 2016: 17437 - Considerable increase.
26 FEB 2017: 18248 - Slight increase.
27 FEB 2018: 17645 - Slight decrease, stuck if compared to 2016.
In 2019 and 2020 there hasn't been much changes, I couldn't get 2019 data because of the new design.

OSU! is doing really well. Tons of recurrent players and a super active mapping/modding community. Also, there don't seem to be any viable competitors from this genre that can steal the playerbase away. I think OSU! has many good years ahead of it.

Osu! is dead because laser is never coming. Osu! is alive because laser is coming.

You might want to broaden your horizons a bit. There are plenty of good rhythm games out there.

osu! is dead in the sense that most communities have more or less diminished overtime.
years ago, like before 2015, osu! would have a lot of active sub-communities compromised of national groups, mapper groups, certain mod-combination player communities (FL), even forum shit posters had their own communities etc. I see less of this compared to back in the day.

osu! over time has strangely become more of a homogenized game in my opinion.
what I mean by this is pp-maps have stomped out most players with unique skills and playstyles from the leaderboard. not saying that all people in the top-100 are, obviously there are many players with incredible skillsets but a majority of them have similar skillsets so there is less incentive to look up to as many different top players as compared to back in the day. On top of that, overall this game community is a lot more westernized/western dominant. Before there were clear western and eastern (asiatic) communities.

I know that numbers wise, osu! is more popular than ever before in it's entire history but osu! and it's community has lost a lot of it's original culture to the point where old players returning after 5 years would find this place unrecognizable.

Agreed, especially the country subforums, for my country at least. I don't even see a great use for them personally but can understand why they exist.

Even though I joined in 2016, I still see the lack of activity compare to the past. Damn.
[vanilla]
I've been here for quite some time, with long breaks in between (always come back because after some years i suddenly get the urge to play osu! again, it's a recurring theme)

And I must say, everytime I come back, the forums and in-game chats get quieter (and more boring imo) each time.
All around it doesn't have the feeling of back then anymore, but regardless I play lol.

I wouldn't say it's dead though....more like not alive but also not dead kinda thing???? So the middle.
Winnyace
I think it's mainly because people switched from the in-game chat and forums to Discord and reddit. The game's not dead by any means, but it'll eventually die, so let's hope it's not tomorrow.

UQY
I'll post a serious reply to this thread. DMCA is a huge threat to osu/the community in general and I honestly can't believe this hasn't been an issue before. Especially as osu continues to grow on Twitch, it seems more and more likely that eventually musicians (and their studios) will start to crack down. When that happens, osu will essentially be dead...

Seems like quarantine has given this game a noticeable bump in popularity. As of late, it has been common to see 26-30K online users.

I dare to say, this game hasn't had consolidated yet until 2015 - early 2016 when the new pp system* led to an adveniment of farm maps. When osu!mania was added in late 2013, it also led to a considerable increase of the game's popularity.

*PP didn't exist at that time as we knew it, back in 201?-2014 ranks were based in map positions, and before that it was based on total score.

well osu! has gotten a larger playerbase now

A dead game would be little no less than a hundred players are playing. osu! on the other hand still gets roughly 1000+ active players monthly, so I'd say the game is alive.
haha i rolypoly
as you can tell osu is dead because I stood in multiplayer lobbies for 4 HOURS and nobody immediately wanted to boost me in rankings and give me a friend for friend rating

Well, it's up to you if you want to play to gain pp or not, most people will only tell to play more, and friend list in osu! is limited, so people usually doesn't add someone randomly (and also osu! doesn't give notification when someone add you).
Fathan18
I think its not a dead game, far from it actually. (and hopefully, it will still be alive for long)

Well, I only play Singleplayer I rarely play Multiplayer, though I can say Timezone has an effect on what kind of activity you could see in Lobby Chat.
Dundee
I don't think osu! is dead or thriving, its just here with a consistent number of players joining and leaving.
lukascn1
i think osu is not ded, but every result is 90% from 2015, so we cant give answer from anything because it is all already answered from 2015. so maybe osu is not ded but only the search result is ded :v
