Is it me or is it better to play mania without music.?

I know, I know. You can't play a rhythm game without music. Whats the point of a rhythm game without music?

But if you didn't know... osu!Mania or osu particularly has those things called, hitsounds. Those things keep things on the songs BPM and that is why I or (probably) you, can play osu without music.

I played mania for about 1 month now. I have good scores on some 1-2 star map difficulties. They are like 800k to 910k score. But for some reason, I tried to play the maps without music. I was shocked. I surpassed all of my maps that has A or S (900k below S) scores. I keep getting new high scores. I tried playing some slightly harder maps and I can play them (I can get far but still fail).

Playing without music feels like your the one playing the song. Its better if you play the ones that has great hitsounds, not just drums. ex. siqlo - One Way Street mapped by Dreamwalker. Its a very good map. Another one is, in love with a ghost - flowers feat. nori mapped by -MysticEyes. Has hitsounds on most of the notes.

I know I may be talking gibberish and I'm sorry. Also sorry for my English/grammar. And my explanation. To summarize everything, try playing osu!mania without music. You can probably surpass your high scores.

you'll have a very tough time with upper end acc scores and SV without game audio. Playing without music will probably help your visual reading, sure- but theres a lot more that goes into reading than visual reading. audio reading the music to lock into a rhythm, accenting inputs based on the song, reading sections of crazy SVs, and getting on time with weird polyrhythms all greatly benefit from audio reading.

Since you're fairly new to the game, if playing without audio helps you improve visual reading, then by all means go for it. but i wouldnt recommend getting accustomed to playing that way as you will be severely limiting your overall skillset and consistency

That may work but as you progress more , you will find that audio is important.

EDIT : ignore this post i was stupid.

More like as he progresses more he will depend less on audio. It would be much harder to read audio cues for sure.

As Lights said, if you're new, and if it helps you improve visual reading, go for it, but don't get used to it. It won't help you in the long run, obviously. Playing with music will help in accuracy and in SV maps (duh). But always try play with audio, it'll really help you improve more!

audio is hardly useful for anything other than svs or accuracy

audio can certainly help on higher end charts, but, like hitsounds, the higher in difficulty you go, the less important audio becomes, and the more important visual reading becomes

tbh it could be because your latency is off try to see if your hitting early or late when with music

I play OSU cuz I can game and enjoy music at same time...
technically music does help a lot and I normally use one of my ear for music with the other for keyboard cuz that gives me the rhythm feel. it's up to preference but I don't see the point of playing OSU without music

I tried playing "DREAM A DREAM" without sound, since I don't like the song. Played the chart and I feel confident after.

Preference, i listen to hard dance music so if im playing a jack file thats offbeat with the kick of the song i am actually listening to it makes this very difficult to focus personally, other than that im sure it would be good!

Sorry for bumping up this old thread.

Several reasons to play without music and rely solely on hitsounds:
- some songs are mapped not that accurately,
- the music can be too loud by default and hide the hitsounds,
- once we get the song in our head, we can remember the beat and tempo of the [rather percussive] hitsounds,
- we can get better hand-eye coordination by being not distracted by the music,
- less latency [?] if you play with potato PC or crappy keyboard,
It's actually nice to play it without music like you are recording solo session on drums.

Nonetheless, I had to admit it sounds kind of lame to play rhythm game without music.
