I've been playing for about 6 months at this point. Just the other day I was going through the settings, and found that my laptop's screen could go from 60 to 120hz and I had been playing at 60hz this whole time. Yet all of a sudden I feel like playing Osu is waaay harder. I don't know if I'm just bad, or if there's a big gap between playing at 60 and 120hz and I just don't know it. Can it actually mess up your skills if you go from 60 to 120 hz?

The difference is crazy, def recommend a 120hz or 144hz monitor.
I got a 165Hz monitor. Things sure a lot smoother.

I have a 144hz monitor and even though I am by no means a good player - but I can tell you that it's a big difference. You will never be able to go back to 60hz, that said - you don't need it.
It's very comfortable. And mathematically speaking, it's a good advantage.
144hz = 7 millisecond of refresh rate
60hz = 16 millisecond of refresh rate
There are 9ms of difference. In OD 8 songs you have (+/-)31.5ms (= 63ms) to hit a 300 circle.
That means 14% (9ms are approximately 14% of 63ms) more time available to see an approach circle moving* and hit a 300...
In greater OD's it increases (OD11=34%).
*=disappearing if you are playing hidden

In my opinion, it really only makes a big difference in osu!mania. In standard osu!, 60hz is fine. You can play with 120hz for smoother results, but 60hz isn't that bad.
But if you play osu!mania, you need a 120hz monitor, or else all the notes will be blurry and you'll have a tough time reading the notes.
I'm not too sure about the other gamemodes.

Anyway, I highly enjoyed using a 144hz screen when I had the chance. But in my opinion, and especially since I don't really play competitively, it wasn't worth the extra money. A smooth and stable 60 is (again in my opinion) far more enjoyable (and much easier to attain) than a choppy 144. (And it's imo wasted money if you cap your games at 60) If you have the hardware to push 144 without sacrificing anything, then by all means go for it!
But while I was using my monitor, I had to sacrifice either overall fidelity, or resolution, to keep the 144hz stable and enjoyable.

i went from 60 to 144 and noticed a difference immediately.
My best friend irl wanted to buy a 144hz for csgo but he did not know if it was worth it, so i told him to come at my place & i will show him what i did is :
-launch csgo in max fps 144 = 144hz
-let him play in a training map a bit
-he did not noticed anything weird except everything was "smoother ,felt more reactive & alive "
-set max fps to 60
-he said wtf your game is freezing & sluttering so hard
-He went back home and could not play a single game of csgo cause it was unplayable for him
-he bought a 144hz monitor for 200€ (benq xl2411z)
-he said it's night & day
From my perspective i went from 60 to 144 & 144 to 240 hz
Imo the difference is there, but not like going from 60 to 144hz
it's still verry noticable & you can tell the difference blindfolded.
So if you can afford it and have a REALLY better gaming experience just go for it =)

it is the standard for monitors after all, but going 120HZ from 60HZ one is huge difference! even going from 60HZ to 75HZ is a big step.
I've been looking for an excuse to buy a 144hz monitor.... I think I might have to now.

Wondering if the differences are equivalent to 30 and 60fps difference, or if it's higher than that.

I just got a 144hz monitor and the difference is pretty crazing, reading patterns and aiming streams is immensely easier. You ever see those "2000fps" osu videos? That's basically what it feels like to play on 144hz I won't lie.

big but not big enough for me to ever consider buying a monitor over 60hz lol. i’m not gonna spend money like that on tech
i don't think using a 60hz monitor would make you significantly worse, but its evident in the price that 120-144hz just makes everything more fluid and less muddled (and laggy, naturally).

Then I tried to play a game back again on my old PC to compare it after just using the new 144Hz screen for mere 1 week, and my eyes were already shocked by how 'laggy' it was (though I've spent 11 years of non-stop gaming with 60Hz). Definitely need some adaptation for the first couple of weeks, but once you're used to it, it's hard to go back..
