I had been a Debian user for so long, so it is nice to have up-to-date packages without worrying about something potentially breaking my system.Winnyace wrote:

this looks extremely confusing, if I ask politely for an explanation as to what this is (os, window open, etc.) would you be able to provide me one?MistressRemilia wrote:

Sure. The OS is Slackware Linux, which has been my preferred OS since 2002, and the one I use exclusively since about six or seven years ago. Slackware defaults to KDE, and also ships with Xfce (and a few others), but I personally prefer to use Sawfish WM for my GUI together with a few instances of fbpanel to give me the bars at the top and bottom. So that's what you see here. I set up the panels so that the desktop vaguely resembles a much older OS called AmigaOS. This is done just out of preference and having experimented with different layouts for so long. I don't have any desktop effects enabled out of preference, so there's no shadows or transparency or anything. The icons are Candy Icons.cr0w wrote:

thank you for the explanation! I've been thinking of getting away from windows and into Linux for a while now and I think you've made an impact into my decision!MistressRemilia wrote:

The top bar shows my free RAM at the left (and my OS/CPU info - just to make it look Amiga-ish). The right hand side shows my system tray, then my pager, then my clock.
The bottom bar has a few launcher icons on the left. Open windows then show up to the right of those, separated by a space.
The window you see is Terminology, my preferred terminal. It's just showing the output of neofetch because I forgot to put hyfetch on my laptop.
To launch programs, I hit Win+Space and it opens up Xfce's Application Finder. That's just a habit I picked up years ago when I used to use Enlightenment. I suppose I _could_ have a sort of start menu, but eh... I like it this way better.
Here's a few more pictures showing it without any windows, and with more windows open. Might make more sense.More pics
Not even hitting a gig of RAM or 10% CPU XD

Why not an operating system that's actually up to date? There are alternatives available now.RoksNRoll wrote:

Cool! A few years ago I tried a Windows 7 set-up on Ryzen 2700X for PCVR, but Oculus ended up being incompatible. It was snappier than 10 and I'd almost entertain it today, but 10 LTSC is pretty good and modern (21H2 runs everything I use).minqwq wrote:
