I had been a Debian user for so long, so it is nice to have up-to-date packages without worrying about something potentially breaking my system.

Updated. Fixed minor stuff.

this looks extremely confusing, if I ask politely for an explanation as to what this is (os, window open, etc.) would you be able to provide me one?

Sure. The OS is Slackware Linux, which has been my preferred OS since 2002, and the one I use exclusively since about six or seven years ago. Slackware defaults to KDE, and also ships with Xfce (and a few others), but I personally prefer to use Sawfish WM for my GUI together with a few instances of fbpanel to give me the bars at the top and bottom. So that's what you see here. I set up the panels so that the desktop vaguely resembles a much older OS called AmigaOS. This is done just out of preference and having experimented with different layouts for so long. I don't have any desktop effects enabled out of preference, so there's no shadows or transparency or anything. The icons are Candy Icons.

The top bar shows my free RAM at the left (and my OS/CPU info - just to make it look Amiga-ish). The right hand side shows my system tray, then my pager, then my clock.

The bottom bar has a few launcher icons on the left. Open windows then show up to the right of those, separated by a space.

The window you see is Terminology, my preferred terminal. It's just showing the output of neofetch because I forgot to put hyfetch on my laptop.

To launch programs, I hit Win+Space and it opens up Xfce's Application Finder. That's just a habit I picked up years ago when I used to use Enlightenment. I suppose I _could_ have a sort of start menu, but eh... I like it this way better.

Here's a few more pictures showing it without any windows, and with more windows open. Might make more sense.

Not even hitting a gig of RAM or 10% CPU XD

thank you for the explanation! :) I've been thinking of getting away from windows and into Linux for a while now and I think you've made an impact into my decision!

ayoooo man that's dope. It is easy af to set up and whatnot, true.

If you got problems with it, head over to the forums. People there are pretty friendly and try to help out. It's a nice community of people there. I will be there trying to help too :)

I kinda inherited a laptop from my wife about a year ago after she upgraded to a custom-built desktop. It's been sitting around gathering dust until last night when I finally got around to installing Slackware Linux on it. Then for shits and giggles, I installed Enlightenment (my old preference) for a WM instead of my usual Sawfish WM. Eats up more ram, but meh, it's a nice change. I ditched the horrible flat theme for it, though.

EDIT: pfft, forgot the obligatory *fetch screenshot.

Pretty boring but goes to show you can run osu! on pretty much anything.

Yes. Her name is Misaki Tobisawa and she is from Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm. It is an eroge VN. She is one of the main girls alongside Asuka Kurashina, the girl from my pfp.

Update this time, since the last post from 11 months ago, but......
VIDEO WARNING
The reason I decided to call a video for this is because I'm actually using a wallpaper engine (not really Wallpaper Engine, though, instead Lively Wallpaper) to keep an ANIMATION instead of a still image on the desktop.
And this is not even the full video, because God knows how it'll be like if I posted the entire thing.

I tried embedding this as a GIF, but well, that GIF ended up being a tad bit too large to embed here in the forums, so I went with a video...

P.S anime is Himitsu no AiPri

Best windows version to date in my opinion next to Windows 8.1. Windows 10 is good but it caused me more problems than it shouldve honestly and 11 is out of the question like what is all this ai stuff that i dont want?!?

Why not an operating system that's actually up to date? There are alternatives available now.

I haven't bothered theming an OS since XP and Windows Blinds days, but that was fun to pull off :p It's basic Xfce with Chicago95 theme (single package on FreeBSD and most Linux distros).

Cool! A few years ago I tried a Windows 7 set-up on Ryzen 2700X for PCVR, but Oculus ended up being incompatible. It was snappier than 10 and I'd almost entertain it today, but 10 LTSC is pretty good and modern (21H2 runs everything I use).

I'm curious about some OpenGL thing with FlightGear and tried everything I could think of, except a Windows 7 install. I've been interested in a reason to try 7 out again :p
