So uh...
There's a DS game called Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! that involves tapping circles to the beat. It was only in Japan but the west we got something similar called "Elite Beat Agents"
osu! was inspired by that DS game and I guess the name stuck.

Well while we’re on that topic let’s talk about the other modes
Taiko is of course based off of Taiko no Tatsujin
CTB is based off a secret game mode of Ez2dj called Ez2catch
Mania is based off of Beatmania and other similar games, like guitar hero and stuff

because you have to push (押す) buttons (ボタン) or keys (キー) on time to not fail (躓く)
