I've found positioning objects in osu!lazer's skin editor to be NOT FUN, so here's a possible solution that I'm pretty fond of.
Basically, instead of shrinking the edges of the play-field to a 3:4 ratio or whatever it is, and then putting the placeable objects toolbox on the side, what if the whole play-field is visible, like how you normally see it while playing, but the sides with the objects are see through, maybe with blur, and if you want to move an object behind it, it will move out of the way so you can place it.
And if you want to access any objects behind the toolbox you press a hotkey that hides the editor completely, so you can move it wherever.
I feel like this might also help with the problem of converted skins' objects being outside of the visible editor the first time you enter it.
Not sure if I explained what I have in my mind well, but I hope I got the idea across
