Ok so my recommended difficulty on osu! is 3.91 but I can play the majority of 4 stars and few low 5 star maps.
I also play a few higher 5 stars varying from 5.3-5.9 on NF for fun because it's the lowest rated maps of some of my favorite songs.

I know this amount of player rank doesn't really matter for someone of my skill level, but I just don't understand how deciding to play one of said maps, 5.62, NF, get a score that I usually get playing that map with around 80% acc and it decides to drop me 88 player rank out of NOWHERE?? I was just playing the map for fun and I get my player rank penalized which I think is pretty dumb, and I wanna know WHY it happens.
(FYI I had already completed a map for pp during this play session and already got a player rank adjustment which is why I'm just absolutely mind boggled)

People can always pass you regardless of what maps you play, you aren't penalized for bad plays unless you accidentally override one of your top 100 scores with a worse score. So you lost 88 player rank because you didn't gain more PP from that score than those 88 people gained in that time. At 500k though, 88 isn't that much.

Well.. at your rank range (and mine too), dropped by 88 rank isn't a big deal in my opinion.. especially the amount of active players in osu standard are massive compared to others so it's a common thing happen here

Something to also consider is that if you, for example, start playing osu for the day and play a song to completion, it will calculate your new rank. I'm not entirely sure how it works; this is all empirical evidence. For example, I'll start up osu for the day, play a map I typically play and I can lose rank. Then I play some random maps and get like +1 lol.

You gain pp by setting a score that appears in your top 100 best performance basically. If not, you won't gain anything or just a little. If a score doesn't show any pp, it means it wasn't your best due to a lower score.

Losing 88 ranks when you are 512,474 is not a penalty, it's because there are a lot of players who gain pp in real time, which makes you lose a few ranks. Don't worry if you lose ranks because of a score you're proud of, it's not a big deal!

You didn't get "penalized". 88 people gained ranks and passed you. It's impossible for one person to gain ranks without at least one other person losing them.

As for the "recommended difficulty" measure, it's not perfectly accurate but it's more supposed to measure your fc level than your ability to pass maps.
