I'd agree that most of these tips are good. Actually I'd also advise against changing to something that's.. well... different from your original name, unless you really want to, you're fully ready, and some of your friends understand you. The reason for this is, no matter how well people know and love you (excluding those you may actually discuss this major name change with), you'll receive quite a bit of negative feedback, even if your name is totally more awesome than it used to be. It's this sort of psychological tendency that's unavoidable, people will tend to gain a bond to a short 10-letter string, and when you overwrite that string completely with a totally different set of letters, they don't react very nicely. I don't really know if I'm all correct with this, as I've only changed names once <_<, but it's always something to look out for.

tl;dr make sure everyone is okay with your name change before you do it

What would also suck with a name change is that if you're the only original version and you change it. There is a good chance someone is going to take your previous name and then you won't be able to go back (if you REALLY screw it up). Just my thoughts on it.

I can confirm this. I tried to hide by changing my username. Didn't quite work; they found out somehow. So then I gave up and used IRC with "Ekaru" as my user name until the mass name rollback occurred (which will probably never happen ever again). Now all is well.

So yes, I highly recommend thinking things through first. I recommend just removing excess crap from your name or giving it good capitalization, unless it's like Weegeevsweegee or some crap like that. I approve of this thread.

It's one of those things that just happen/inevitable.

I was only referring to temporarily having people making rude comments about the name change, if it was permanent then the name change system would never be used <_<

Even though I can't talk since minimal crap was pulled on to me when I changed my name. (I think only a few people such as Larto, ztrot and Rolled got irked at me when I changed it) It really is a thing to say, like Rantai, whether the friends who get angry at you are really your friends.

And even with people who aren't, it's just a matter of a fact that if you're happy with it. A rollback is only going to do so much. I am still proud of my name change and do not regret my decision at all.

(inb4 "sais the one with the name failboat". I am aware of that my name is a meme, albeit had it for ages so i don't see why i should bother changing. Haven't seen all too many people going by the same nick anyhow

i would obviously change it if i could (or actually gave a shit))

Also almost two years I must admit that being laughed at because of your nick is really annoying. It's not that I experienced that but with my IRL name and a friend's being almost the same, I went from "lolrofl" to "fnrozeugfhziufhoifhzeoi". :/

Even if you're addressing the weeaboos who originally didn't have Japanese names, people can have their own choices. Having a name with romaji isn't annoying/offensive to the general public, only a range of people, therefore I think this is a bad suggestion.

Putting "osu" in your name just ruins it entirely. If I HAVE to explain, it's because that's the game you're playing, which means you didn't even have the "originality" to remember a favorite series. It's unoriginal but it's better than using the name of the franchise of the website you're using in your username, that's for sure. Imagine if I were on YouTube and I put my username down as "YouTuber". How bad do you think that would be?

It's true, actually.

There was a mass rollback of name changes after the first week or so, and you were not the only one affected. You were extremely active in chat at the time and, thus, well-known, and your name change confused the hell out of everybody. This was the exact reason given in the post which listed the name of users affected by the rollback, actually (Justin Bieber wasn't confusing, though, but I think that was changed anyways as an act of mercy).

All of the examples you posted are of either not well-known users, or took place after the first week name changes were allowed, after the rollback occurred and there were less chaos. That's all there is to it.

The name-change confusion can lead to pleasant surprises sometimes, though.

like when I realized Weegee made a reasonably intelligent post

Though I wouldn't say any of these tips are definite rules, it's good to give people some things to consider.

For me, it looks like Teta has a good reason, since his name means boobs. :i There's all kind of jokes with his names.
I don't see a reason for why not, since he's as well-know as Lilly is, and he has a good reason too. One should really consider it.

You're misunderstanding what I was referring to. In case you don't remember or weren't there...

After the first week or so there was a rollback due to confusion and/or stupidity; it happened soon after Wojjan changed Wojjan's name to Todesengal, thus leading to mass confusion. Because both Teta and I changed our names prior to the rollback, we were included as part of the rollback because we were well-known. People affected by the rollback also lost their one name-change opportunity. However, that was the only rollback.

Because Mariobros777, Harris##, and Weegee changed their name after the rollback, and there were no rollbacks after the first one, they were allowed to keep their name change, for better or for worse. It's all about the timing, and that's all there is to it. Fair? Probably not. Is that the way it is? Pretty much.

So, if he's still unable to change his name, that is why.

I did this once on another forum. Changed it to "Zachary Taylor" during the 2008 election season to celebrate our new candidates along with 20 other people, all changing their names to past presidents.

I didn't know who the fuck anyone was...

Also, while 4 letter names are awesome, 7 letter names are my maximum if I want to be known as someone.

I think it's okay to use numbers as long as you use them with moderation.
(maximum 3 numbers or 1/7th of the name, whichever is less
& they're not all in beginning or end)
