As of current, the following is a rule in the osu! ranking criteria:

All actively clicked parts of objects must have at least one audible hitsound that does not blend with the song. Players do not receive enough feedback otherwise. Using keysounds as hitnormals without other distinct additional hitsounds, for example, is not allowed.

However, I suggest we reword the rule to something like the following

All actively clicked parts of objects must have at least one audible hitsound. Exceptions can be made for quiet portions of the song, or when players do not need to hear a hitsound to assist with rhythm. Players do not receive enough feedback otherwise. Using keysounds as hitnormals without other distinct additional hitsounds, for example, is not allowed.

OR

We convert the current rule into a guideline.

Here's why:

  1. Keysounds almost always blend with the song in some way - they aim to follow and recreate the song. Keysounds are already getting ranked frequently and actively break this rule.
  2. Potential for misinterpretation of the current rule. People read it as 'all active objects must have an audible hitsound,' regardless of whether it blends with the song or not. For example, look at [beatmapsets/2047252/discussion/4273980/timeline#/4131033], where the hitsound itself did not blend with the song, as there was a gap in the song, so it could not blend.

1. this rule doesn't allow ONLY keysounds on an object
2. that isn't a misinterpretation, the plain english intent of the rule is to have hitsound feedback on every active object that isnt a spinner start

O my bad on 1. i think i misunderstood That Wording (tho I swear ive seen keysounding that is Only keysounds on an object)

On #2 I think if the intent of the rule is to have active hitsound feedback on every active object the wording can be improved to reflect that

The current wording makes it seem like you do not need hitsound feedback if it does not blend the song.

May I suggest the following to make it clearer

All actively clicked parts of objects must have at least one audible hitsound. Players do not receive enough feedback otherwise. Using keysounds as hitnormals without other distinct additional hitsounds, for example, is not allowed.

or just let active objects not require hitsound feedback when its not needed to assess rhythm or accuracy (Like my proposal :3c)

the rewording you propose is actually more confusing than the current phrasing, since "Using keysounds as hitnormals without other distinct additional hitsounds, for example, is not allowed." is what follows the "hitsound that does not blend with the song" part, hence if the premise is removed, the example wouldn't make much sense

>or just let active objects not require hitsound feedback when its not needed to assess rhythm or accuracy
that sounds like a good way to make a map infinitely more annoying to play, if anything

my takeaway is that we shoudl try to make this more clear in general period and that everyone involved is on the same page that right now it's technically clear (what wafer wanted), but could be better?

i'll archive this for now and throw it at osu rewrite project at least
