Remmy's first news post.

Netflix is changing its plans around to two separate plans:

Unlimited streaming (from pc, wii, xbox, ps3, iOS etc): $7.99/mo
Unlimited DVD renting : $7.99/mo

Want both? You got to pay for both. ($15.98/mo)
Its original plan was one or two DVD rentals and unlimited streaming for around $9.99/mo

Whats funny is that twitter, its facebook, and the blog comments are 98% negative against the change.

It can't be that bad, right?

It killed off most other rental competitors (the Blockbuster and both Hollywood Video stores closed down around me), and now they think they own the "hill" so to say. It's pretty much a slap in the face to customers.
Cuddlebun
never used the DVDs anyway, just streaming

By DVD renting, if you can have multiple out at the same time, then it's a good/better deal imo.

The streaming price stayed the same. Before this, you can get unl. streaming + DVD at home at a time for 10$. So as long as them raising the prices allows you to have multiple DVDs at once, I'll be happy. Otherwise yeah, they're just raising it 6$/mo.

I've basically been only using the streaming, and have just been too lazy to cancel the DVD service. I've had the same disc sitting on my coffee table for months by now. Guess it's time to send it on back.

Why would you want to use both?
Cuddlebun
streaming does not include the entire library, so sometimes if you want to watch something you have to order the DVD. The DVD library is much larger.

1 dvd at a time its 7.99 2 is 11.99. Thats not a very good deal if you include shipping. Thats why I used redbox you can use the code dvdonme and get free dvd and bluray rentals.

Where are those statistics coming from.
Also, I personally don't care about Netflix, but I know my parents do both DVD and streaming so it isn't good news for me.

Explain it however you like, raising prices for something without needing to because of cost is greed and nothing else. There's seemingly not going to be a change for those who do streaming only, however for all the dvd renters prices go up. There's no logic here as no shipping increase or dvd price hike has happened. (at all for years and years and forever) Netflix, I am disappoint.

So you're some sort of expert on what studios charge Netflix to stream their movies now?

Okay so MAYBE those numbers were pulled out of my ass, but just read their facebook wall, do a twitter search on Netflix, and even the blog's comment page.

The majority of the responses are negative.

What does the streaming fee have to do with it? Essentially "stream only" stays the same and dvds now charge more as a separate system meaning the dvd section is where they need more profit, and anyone who has purchased dvds or mailed anything can tell you shipping has not skyrocketed in the past few years nor have the cost of dvd's. I mean imagine osu charging a fee to play, for $10 you get unlimited beatmap downloads and IRC+forum access, or you could pay $8 to access the IRC+forums, but wait now we're gonna remove the beatmap downloads+IRC+forum combo and you have to pay another 8$ for those seperate and IRC+forum fee stays the same, why the hell would you raise the price of one thing to support another, you raise the fee of the thing you support of course, people these days honestly now.

When changes happen, more likely than not, responses will be from people motivated (read: angry or bothered) enough to actually speak out. Many who don't mind the changes will not really care to get on the company's Facebook/twitter/etc to say what they feel.

As for what my family will most likely do about this change, I don't think we will mind it much. Sure, the price hike is a bit of an inconvenience, but we actually use the service a lot. We stream online and on our PS3 just about every day, we get 4+ movies in the mail a month, and we also use Redbox when we feel the need to watch a movie out of the blue.

It's a business and at the moment, it's still substantially cheaper than regular subscription TV services that run at $60+ a month.

It's a business, they are there to make profit not cater to the public out of goodwill.
If they have monopolized like Remmy said they have then they are pretty much free to raise the cost as much as they want to, considering a balance with how much people are willing to pay for the service.
