Old (circa late 2021) rule wrote:

If the song was featured or tied to a media after it was released, the source field is optional.

Current rule wrote:

  1. You must use the Source field if the song comes from or is directly tied to another media such as a video game, movie, series, event, etc. This also applies if the song was featured or tied to a media after it was released, but is primarily known due to that source. If a song has multiple potential sources, any option is valid.
    1. For remixes, arrangements, or covers based upon the original song, the source of the original song should be used.
    1. Website names may be used as sources when the song is tied to specific cultural phenomena related to the platform, or the song is composed as a website theme/background song.
    1. In cases where a song compilation/remix/medley/etc. has songs without a common source, the sources must be put in the tags instead of the source field (unless the compilation is prominently tied to a source itself).
osu! itself should never be used in the source field except in cases where the track was specifically created for osu! (also known as an osu! original), such as commissioned tournament tiebreaker tracks.
Proposal: add "If the song was featured or tied to a media after it was released, the source field is optional." back into the main paragraph of the rule

Don't have much else to say, just made the thread following from beatmapsets/1146702/discussion/-/generalAll#/3607471 since no-one else did. Feel free to discuss

This can resolve some interesting cases where songs from other game is featured in the pop cultures, and such. Also, the addendum is completely logical.

However, there should be a clear general solution for some cases.

For example (I extended this since my English is so bad):
  1. Mapped a full song, but the song is featured in another media as opening while cutted > optional source
  2. Mapped a cut song that has exact parts of the media featuring it > mandatory source
Logically, if the song comes first before the media even featured it, why forcing people to use source field? It should be optional.

agree

additional support: example #2 in community/forums/topics/1583373 which is honestly batshit insane and should never happen again

definitely agree, if we can fast track this somehow before roundabout gets ranked that'd be ideal

Huge agree, didn't even know this got removed but think it's important to prevent metadata being forced when it's not relevant to the original release. Will see what's up with this.

Hard agree, I don't think sources should be forced in these scenarios.

Seems fine since tags exist anyway, so it wouldn't affect searchablility - if a song is strongly associated with a piece of media, even if this change allows removing the source from the source field, it would be tagged with the relevant source anyway.
For example, this cover of Kimi no Kioku is tagged with "persona 3" despite Cover Metadata Precedence.

Agreed yeah, encounter a lot of ambiguity due to the current rule, so changing it back will bring a lot of benefit for making it clear.
