SSHing while at work because I am a sinful employee

also known as the "hey peppy quick question for you" thread

I've never successfully ssh'd into my own system before (okay I've tried once or twice at the most) and since a certain someone or another seems pretty competent at doing it, I thought I'd ask how he (read: you, peppy) accomplishes this task, and how I might go about it with my own setup.

I use putty.exe for the actual SSHing, and have a Zonealarm firewall.

I "think" what I need to do is go into ZoneAlarm, accept requests from [WORK IP ADDRESS], and then just ssh to [HOUSE IP ADDRESS] but I have tried it in the past to no avail (it might have been due to past workarea security and whatnot preventing outbound requests, though).

help pls

This may be an obvious questions, but are you actually running an SSH server at home? Given that you're running zonealarm, I'm assuming you're trying to SSH into a windows box, in which case your efforts are going to continue to be fruitless. There are very few benefits to running an SSH server on a windows box for your kind of use in any case. You'd be better off allowing Remote Desktop connections (control panel -> system -> remote) and making sure port 3389 is open in zonealarm and forwards to your windows PC from your router if necessary. That's what I do anyway, to access both my desktop/gaming pc and server box.

I can't find a way to fiddle with ports but my computer hates sending/receiving connections all around.

I can't SSH into my Unix nor Windows Box at work, either. It's possible that the Windows Box can't be SSH'd into and that I just have the last octet of the Unix Box's IP wrong (since I've done it successfully in the office) but =|

I don't want to SSH into my Unix box though, the whole point of my efforts is for a "It looks like I'm actually working" method of writing text (to my own harddrive) that supports CRLF newline formatting and not just LF.

Hmm, had a thought. I've done port forwarding/tunneling with putty in the past; is there a way I can make putty enable me to SSH into my home Windows?
