got my 3DS last night, yea the release games aint the best but they are fun, i got street fighter and ridge racer, SF is a lot of fun and ridge racer is cool too.

tbh im enjoying it a lot, also i noticed that the 3D effect in games is a hell of a lot better than it was with the AR due to the low quality camera's

the bat life aint that annoying tbh for me, if im out for over 3 hours i will just turn off the wifi and 3D which gives around 5 hours life, and for other times the combo of the dock and the plug works out very good

so yea....my view is im enjoying it so it was worth getting ;)

Wait a couple of months. There's not a single good release game, early units often have design flaws, and they'll have lowered the price at least once by the time it has a decent library.

The 3DS isn't going to support piracy unless you permanently disable wifi though, which means it won't have the emulation capabilities of the PSP which is a bit saddening

actually it just occurred to me that the homebrew community will in all likelihood figure out how to can all the 3DS's anti-"piracy" security

given that the 3DS was hacked to play DS games in about 3 days since its JP release, I'll remain optimistic

Okay after playing around with it on my brother's yesterday I take back what I said about it. The 3DS is FUCKING AWESOME!. Add a few more underlines and you'll see how awesome it is. It isn't as MetalMario claimed like a hologram, it is full properly proper 3D. Playing shit like PES really looks as if you're looking straight into the pitch. Also Face Raiders is the funniest thing ever.
I still would suggest waiting for more games though. The launch line up is terrible imo. Seriously, what's with that Pilotwings? It's just the Wii Sports Resort flying minigame with a few more vehicles. Weird.

Maybe when Devil Survivor 3 comes out.

"Lenticular Printing" has tis own, separate Wikipedia article, linked to from your article, and it's somewhat more detailed and interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenticular_printing

I agree that the concept is pretty much the same, but the implementation seems distinct

After trying it out, I do want one. Waiting a bit before I get one, though, so I don't have no games for a long time (Devil Survivor Overclocked at the end of June).

The fact that the 3DS costs $249.99 (excluding tax) in my area is absolutely ridiculous, so no. I have a perfectly functional Nintendo DS Lite anyway, and I'd rather save up those ~283 bucks for a new iPod Touch. :3
Rantai
Got myself one at launch and played around with it.

Took me a while to get used to the 3D but it's really good fun, especially with those cards they give you. I got Ghost Recon with it and, being a fan of Advanced Wars, am having lots of fun shooting things (admittedly only done the first couple of missions so far).

My biggest gripe so far is how it handles DS games, it's blurry. I guess my DS lite will not be collecting dust just yet.
Neo@lex
You can disable that if you're okay with having the game letterboxed in the middle of the screen. Just hold start and select as you boot up the game.
DaceGiga
I'm having a dilemma over it and the NGP. Siiigh. Which, which.
awp
250 dollars for a launch price does not seem that bad at all to me. Though, the launch titles do seem pretty weak, and every store I've been in has had plenty of units available, so it sure isn't facing the Wii's scarcity problem.
[DG2L]YungYeezy
I'm gonna buy it when no one wants it anymore. I'm perfectly fine with my pal the Gameboy SP.

Wikipedia, DS model release dates, NA/JP wrote:

Nintendo DS - 21 November 2004 (NA)/2 December 2004 (JP)
Nintendo DS Lite - 2 March 2006 (JP)/11 June 2006 (NA)
Nintendo DSi - 1 November 2008 (JP)/5 April 2009 (NA)
Nintendo DSi XL - 21 November 2009 (JP)/28 March 2010 (NA)
So, hey guys, release dates. The time between DS releases is a little ridiculous, yes, but it was only a problem with the DSi XL (especially considering the fact that they released info about the 3DS exactly one week away from the US launch of the DSi XL). I'd give it more than a few months. In fact, I'd give them more than a year, at least, seeing how it's a new console with a completely new library of games being released.

Also, I like the 3DS as is. I'm going to purchase one as soon as I have the money to.
Azure_Kite
My, without the Stretching on DS Titles, they look rather small on the screen. That's the change in resolution for you.

Not that I mind. OTO 2 and Okamiden are still fun, either way.
rust45
Due to the fact that my DS Lite seems to be dying (flickering screen, sometimes full-blown darkness and a random shut off that made me lose 2 hours worth of Pokemon breeding) I'm going to get one of these sooner then I planned.
jashngooyen
I got one about 3 days after the launch! :D Face Raiders is freaking AWESOME! HAVE YOU SEEN THAT SHIIIITTT!

I got Nintendogs + Cats: Golden Retriever and Street Fighter 4. The cute and fluffiness of the dogs (and cats) are GREAT! Street Fighter 4 has great usage with the 3D.
awp
found out today that Cave Story 3D is supposed to exist and it's NIS America's job to get it out the door for Q2

that is even more appealing to me than OOT
Akai-Moeru
I'm not buying that. Ever. I don't like Nintendo or the Nintendo DS or this new 3D fad. I'm waiting for the NGP.
Azure_Kite
To each their own.

3D EBA go, iNIS. Or even OTO3.
Kanade_old
I have one and I have to say it's amazing, the Streetpass system that allows you to meet Mii's of other people and share Puzzle pieces with eachother just by walking past eachother is awesome and a friend and I meet up every day just for that. Face Raiders is fun for awhile but it's not really something you can play everywhere.

The only game I have is Super Monkey Ball 3D and it was over sort of fast so I can't judge on that but Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus Uprising and ofcourse Ocarina of Time look amazing
Ikillforpies

Let me add Kid Icarus: Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D and Super Mario Bros 3D to that.

I havn't heard anything about a Super Smash Bros. on the 3DS, though it wouldn't suprise me if they announce it tomorrow.

Also, (this is just my opinion) I doubt there will be a Nintendo 3DS Lite, I know the DS has been ''remade'' plenty of times too, but the 3DS pretty much already has every one of those ''upgrades'' each new version of the DS got.

Ikillforpies wrote:

The price really isn't that bad, and I think the release games are being underrated. I had lots of fun with Super Monkey Ball 3D and Super Street Fighter 3D, besides that I've seen Pilotwings Resort and it really shows the 3D at its best

There's been a serious decrease in Nintendo's profits over the last few years. The decline in the popularity of the Wii and the DS has predominantly affected this. To resolve this they've introduced this 3DS gimmick and have announced the Wii 2.

I meant that you can pretty much be sure that they'll release another revision to maximize their profits.

A brighter/sharper screen and better battery life would be a nice place to start.
Mashley
Actually I found the 3DS screen very bright and sharp, dunno why people are complaining about that. But yes a longer battery life is a must, the current battery is pathetic. Honestly that's the biggest reason the hold off from buying one other than the lack of games, it's a huge design flaw.
awp
I heard it was like 4 hours with 3D enabled. That's a hell of a lot better than my DS's battery life of 10 minutes.
Azure_Kite
Your DS has had a long life ;O_O

Considering that there are 3 screens being used simultaneously during 3D mode, it stands to reason that Battery life would be heavily impacted.

Given the fact that the unit is about the same size as the DS Lite (Mine of which gets around 5-8 hours of life), and has three screens, and improved components pretty much across the board, it seemed obvious to me that we wouldn't be seeing long discharge cycles here.

That being said, There are a few things they could improve, mayhaps even through a software update.

For one, I can't stand the blur that occurs when using a DS Game without Forcing the resolution down. Fair enough this is due to the resolution differences between the DS and 3DS Formats, but it would be nice if they could figure out a way to reduce the blur caused by that.

I also concur with the idea of another level of brightness; it could sure use another level.

That being said, it will be the only thing I'd use for months when they bring out Cave Story, the Wright / Layton Crossover and Devil Survivor.
awp
Using nearest-neighbor scaling on images that are not 1:1 tends to look bad

Try playing Final Fantasy Tactics zoomed out for an example. I believe the Chapter 1 Ramza looks really bad with some sprites...possibly the casting animation. Trying to reduce the sprite resolution causes some terrible pixel overlapping, and I reckon the same would hold true scaling up

Granted, TWEWY used it, and that looked good iirc, so you could be right. I'd have to do some more research

You are aware you can turn 2D off? Why do people think it'll only play games in 3D?

I got one for my birthday.

The AR games are amazing, a little FPS laggy if you move too fast though which sucks. You also need a fair bit of light to get them working.

I only have super monkey ball and rayman but they suck. :/

Waiting for Zelda, Dragonquest and pokemanz to be honest.

I'm soo envious of my friend, who is working for Nintendo Finland and he already has the Ocarina of Time on the 3DS ;_;

Messing around with the e-store now.

I have the Pokedex3D and Excitebike (I'm sure like everyone else with a wifi connection)

I find Excitebike's 3D effects a tad underwhelming, as it also zooms out on the screen, reducing it's impact. Oh well.
LuigiHann
I suppose I should have expected a bit less from a "3D Classics" game, but I was hoping that ExciteBike would look more like the ExciteBike visualizer in the 3DS music player. That would have been nice. I think the 3D Classics line will work better with more typical side-scrolling games, rather than isometric ones like ExciteBike.

Got Link's Awakening and Shantae, and a couple of other DSi games. Why did they have to use select+start to load games in the original resolution? Those flat buttons are such a pain to hold down. Any other combination of buttons would have been preferable, or better yet, an actual setting that could be saved. Oye.

The 3D trailers were cool. Looking forward to the new Paper Mario

The compensation for us early adopters is 20 free GBA and NES games (50/50 split), BTW. About $50 total was saved over here due to a Target deal anyways. So, 20 free games - all of which are pretty solid first-party titles so far - for $30 is satisfying for me.

Anyways, yes, this was badly needed. $170 is similar to the price of what the various DS models were, so this is a very good price.

P.S. Also, Super Mario 3D Land is confirmed for November, and Mario Kart 7 for December.
Towjow
I bought the 3ds just for The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of time, was worth the money. If I was still in LA on the 12th august, I would have totally waited to purchase it on that date.
Azure_Kite
Legend of Zelda has been the most substantial 3DS Purchase I've made so far. It's pretty much had a graphical overhaul (OHGOD TEXTURES) and it includes both the original and Master Quest.

I also got an Ocarina of Time, but no luck playing it, yet.

I plan to get one at that price, but I'm probably just going to play DS games on it for now until Starfox/Cave Story/Mario/Kiddick

That's exactly what I've been doing, actually. The circle pad is so much more comfortable than the DS's control pad.
Towjow
I would pay extra 100$ for Camelot to release Golden Sun for 3DS :c That'd made quite a lot people purchase the 3DS I believe.

I'm still waiting for Cave Story. That'll be all I play for some time when it's released.

Nintendo Australia plan to offer an exclusive Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program to consumers who have purchased the Nintendo 3DS at the original launch price. The program will enable those Nintendo 3DS owners to download 10 NES™ games and 10 Game Boy™ and Game Boy Advance™ games for free from the Nintendo eShop.

These free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before the price drop on 12 August. These users will automatically be registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. The program contains two elements:

1. Starting 1 September, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™ Inc.: Minigame Mania and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

Drakari_old
I would recommend it if you want the games. I've tried it and the 3D works well (Which is important when you wear prescription glasses, the other alternatives don't fit very well), but it's really just a gimmick that doesn't add a lot to the gameplay. It is nice to look at, but I personally would prefer higher detail over 3D so I'm going with the PSV when it comes out.

Or I may end up getting both, with that price drop I can probably afford it... Cave Story 3D might be worth that. Would be a shame to waste the XL I already have though, maybe there's a good trade-in option somewhere.
awp
apparently I'm immune or at least pretty resistant to 3D headaches. I played for an hour or so and didn't feel anything. Also dicking around on the 3D camera is neat as long as you don't allow common sense to spoil the novelty of it

Initially I got hyped real badly for it, but then it all subsided when the retail prices first popped up. No way in hell I would pay €249,90 for a console that's worth €189 in US currency. The initial list of games didn't please me at all either.

Still not willing to spend my money on it. Maybe once the presumable 3DS Lite comes out... nah, rather wait for the Wii U.

The 3DS is already pretty small - almost uncomfortably so, I'd argue. Very little of the inner surface area is not occupied by screens or buttons

Yeah, it's actually about as small as a DS Lite. It's probably a tad bigger but it still fits into my old DS Lite case.
LuigiHann
I doubt they'll do a Lite version specifically, but there'll presumably be a Version 2 of some kind eventually. It's just the way they do handhelds. I do wonder about this one though, just because the 3DS has so under-performed compared to their expectations. I don't know if that suggests a revision sooner or no revision at all, but I imagine it'll have a big impact on their plans one way or the other.

Probably set in some kind of virtual/dream/virtual-dream world

I hope at least one of these games (maybe not until the real KH3) gets some Muppet cameos. Probably not a whole Muppet world, but a Muppet Theater building would be a nice addition to a Traverse-like world.

3D is set after the events of Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. And the rest I'll put in spoilers:
SPOILER
Following the destruction of "Ansem" and Xemnas at the hands of Sora and Riku, Xehanort is revived. In response, Yen Sid decides to put Sora and Riku through the Mark of Mastery Exam in order to become full-fledged Keyblade Masters and counter Xehanort's threat...
...According to an interview, Nomura said the game will take part, at least partially, on the Mark of Mastery.
So maybe this game takes place just before the Mark of Mastery and prepares Sora and Riku to it in virtual spaces?
