Tips on getting past 4.6-5* maps and what mindset to have? (4k)

Hey, I've found myself to be a bit stuck on maps in the 4.6-5* range. I seem to be quite inconsistent in this range as I can get an S on some songs but then fail another of the same or lower difficulty. Any tips on getting past this range or being more consistent would be greatly appreciated.

SR in mania is especially busted since the SR of a map is calculated solely by note density. This is why you shouldn't focus hard on the "S ranking every map in my SR range before moving up" mentality. I need to farm high 6* to gain pp, but there are plenty of 4* maps that I struggle to S rank on because of their patterns(keep in mind I play 7k, but I'd assume it would be the same on 4k as well). Take Mario Paint for example. a high 4* map, yet the patterns make it absurdly difficult for its SR. On the contrary, Triumph and Regret is a mid 5* map, yet the manipulable patterns make it very easy for its SR. You just have to get better overall, there's really nothing you can do about it yet. As you get better, you will be able to S rank those maps. But keep in mind, this problem will always exist no matter what skill level you are.

Ah, okay, thank you. That makes a lot more sense. Do you have any tips on what grades I should be aiming for in that case and what mentality I should have?

I really like that question. Personally, if it's a map that you struggle on, aim for a 93%. Because from what I've experienced, aiming for a 95% is good, but it doesn't promote improvement as much since you're not constantly pushing your limits. Others may think differently, so take my advice as you may. And once you have reached a certain point, you will find that maps that you 93% on before will now be easily S rankable as you get better and better(not to mention it's a dopamine boost seeing that insane acc increase).

As for mentality, I'm a firm believer in enjoying the game. It doesn't matter how; if you find fun in gaining ranks and improving, you are doing fine. But the moment you get frustrated and beat yourself down for not improving fast enough is where you need to either reset or take a break. Improvement in mania is NEVER consistent. One day you might feel like a god, and the next day you might feel like you regressed 2 months behind your skill level. This is normal. Don't get discouraged by this. Just keep playing the same way you did, constantly pushing your limits and you will get better. This applies for any keymode.

TL;DR Aim for 93% on maps you find difficult, enjoy the game, don't get frustrated, and improvement is never consistent.

Thanks! I will try my best to follow that and I definitely know what you mean about feeling amazing one day and feeling like you are worse than you were months ago the next. I have a question for you about that topic though. From your experience, do you find it better to take breaks on those off days until your mentality recovers or do you find it better to just push through anyway and ignore that feeling of being bad? Also, do you recommend coming back to maps that you got 93% on when you feel like you've improved?

Honestly it depends what you want to do. I personally like the powering through method. Taking breaks and ignoring the skill dip will further demotivate me from playing, since I tell myself "I'll just rest for 1 more day". Then I come back, notice I'm bad, and rinse and repeat. So I just push through. I also never really had problems with my mentality in this game, so being in a skill dip hardly changes my motivation at all. Of course it feels slightly discouraging, but I just play fun songs that I can 93% on during that time. Also, if it's fun, you can always try and set new PBs on maps that you already S ranked. It's quite fun.

As for coming back to maps, you def should. Come back every once in a while; don't play the same pool of maps every day because that will create mindblock and also create the illusion of not improving. Because at some point, you'll set a score so good that it'll be a score that will be super difficult to overwrite. But yea, you should def come back to old maps you struggled on as sort of like a test to see if you actually improved over time.

Edit: Here is what I mean:

All of the plays below my most recent play were all set within a 2 week timespan in no particular order during march-april. I didn't play the map for 3 months, and when I played it again today, I set a much better score, clearly indicating improvement. The time difference doesn't have to be this much, but you get the gist.

Okay, thanks for all of the help! I'll make sure to apply it and I hope it'll help. Thank you for your time.

Sorry for randomly chiming in and I might sound dumb asking this but how often should I play maps I can be comfortable with compared to the ones that I'll probably struggle?

This is completely up to you and how you want to play the game. But I personally usually play maps I never played before or maps that are challenging for me. I only play the same maps again for warm up purposes(I have a folder with 1-2 maps of each skill set that I warm up with every day. I update the folder every month as my skill increases) or if I want to check my improvement every once in a while.

I meant to ask this earlier but forgot. I have a habit of quitting songs mid-song if I feel like the patterns are too difficult and I feel like I’ll get less than 88%. Should I keep that habit or should I just push through (either to the end or until I fail)?

If it's something you just can't read, just quit; it doesn't matter. If it's because of stamina, push through.

Took the words right out of my mouth. If it’s something you cant read, then there’s no purpose in continuing(since you’re probably mashing at that point). But if it’s stamina related, power through because it’ll help build endurance(don’t pause btw if you are planning to train stamina tho)
